hey
i'm sorry i keep posting these questions. although i'm fairly confident using windows i'm scared of messing up with linux. i have tried searching these forums on the questions i need to know but some of it i can't find and most of it i can't understand.
anyway, here's my question:

1.say i don't have any partitions on my drive. all i have is one c: with 120gigs of space and a copy of xp installed. can i install linux on this drive too without causing problems and would it be easy enough to do that i.e. i would get it without any trouble by boot installing?

2.would it be better to have linux on d: partition with 10gigs and xpee on c: partition with 110gigs.

i really don't want to mess this up. i've got too many backup cd's i don't need anymore. talk to me like i know nothing - please try keep it simple. i'm really excited about downloading linux but i want it to go smooth..

looking forward to your responses...

you need to create at least one seperate partition for (k)ubuntu
10gig should be enough (my current installation is 6 gb, and i got pretty much extra software and games, but not much mp3 files (those are on other partitions)

will linux be able to use the files on the windows partition if i do put it in a 10 gig partition

also will it work if they're on the same partition (windows/linux) or not

since windows is probably ntfs, linux won't be able to write, but will only have read access to the windows partition..
and because it can't write, its not possible to install linux on the same partition (i dont think it would work with vfat partition either)

ok so if i understand correct i could put linux in its own partition and say have a few extra gigs on the same partition and linux would be able to read and write on that partition. i could use all the software on that drive but i wouldn't be able to write on the windows partition..

That is correct if your Windows is on NTFS. You can read from it however. You can partition your drive to run Windows XP and NTFS. However, personally, I prefer one OS to one box. I like to optimize a box for a particular OS.

By the way, there is no such thing as stupid questions.
