1) Is it simple to install bochs in Ubuntu?

2) What is a good chatting program for Ubuntu? In windows I have Trillian and I love it. Note, I don't want to start a flame-war on this topic.

1. It seems to have a package, so the command "apt-get install bochs" will probably install it. You could also sue the graphical installation tool named synaptic to install it.

2. Many people use gaim, and I've never heard a complaint. It comes by default with Ubuntu. See http://gaim.sourceforge.net

It might be better to try qemu instead, since its much faster.
