Live CD: trackpad difficulties

I've tried the live CD, both Edgy and Dapper, on my iBook G4. It's rather frustrating as the pointer moves the minimum amount across the screen with the trackpad and to get from one corner of the screen to the other takes forever and a day.

Any ideas on how to remedy this? I tried going to the Mouse preference and changing the motion but to no avail.
