Anyone else have some concerns about this? With how badly supported dx9 is over here as it is, the release of dx10 I suspect will only push Linux further back in the gaming area.
Does DX10 spell the end for Linux gamers?

DX9 is not supported. Its a microsoft product. What is supported is OpenGL and emulation of DirectX through OpenGL.

Plus, to what sukarn said, the wine guys are on a very good track
anyway.
There were even discussions on WineConf 2006, about supporting XP with their d3d10.
Stefan mentioned Microsoft is currently offering a lot of incentives for Windows developers who develop D3D10-only games since they'll only be usable on Vista - there's no plan to backport D3D10 to XP. Dan Kegel asked if that means we should port Wine's forthcoming D3D10 implementation to Windows, which would be relatively easy when we switch to WGL.

I know all this. Point is that even now games that rely heavily on dx9 are unplayable with wine cedega and crossover.
It's kind of the point. DX isn't support, and won't be supported, and as more developers adopt it it will become less and less likely for emulation to be possible.

By sticking with only DX10, developers essentially close the door on any non-Windows platforms (ex. Nintendo, PlayStation, Mac, etc). If they want to do something that dumb, well its their problem. The decent game companies don't play risks like betting on a single platform.
So DX10 will not end gaming on Linux. DX10 means only a better API for Windows development. Also most people prefer gaming on consoles, anyways. The XBox 360 more likely could end gaming on Linux Game developers not seeing Linux as a viable market, will end gaming on Linux.

Wow, Iovar I just read that part about wine being ported to windows to provide directX 10 support to Windows OSs other than Vista (microsoft are not providing DX10 support to XP because its "too hard to do", ie they want people to be forced to buy vista to play games).
If the wine team got dirextX 10 working on XP then that would be hilarious! Also even with a windows port of wine, wine would probably still work better on linux. So gamers not wanting to fork out for Vista could install linux for better DX10 game support than on XP, and that would simply be amazing!
Also that would mean I'd get to play Alan Wake, which is DX10 exclusive, and looks like it could be a great game. :)

There is gaming on linux? The closest I ever came to gaming on this OS was Eve Online, an official linux version, and even then the the FPS suked
(20's) with my 8600gt 512mb. Plus I think companies are afraid of being locked out by Winblows if they support multiple OS's.

Way to go reviving a dumb topic with an appropriate response months after it was ended. Burn this thread >_>
