View Full Version : Add search engines?

How do I find the search string for a given bittorrent search site? That is, how do I add search engines?

And more generally, is it reasonable to fold a browser into the app, like ktorrent does? Or would that be a pain?

In any case, the program is great, if any authors are reading.

you have to fill in the url which will pointing to a torrent site. For example, searching for foo at google needs the url:
http://www.google.nl/search?q=
Appending 'foo' to the url (http://www.google.nl/search?q=foo) results in searching foo at google.nl.

I cannot set up another example with a torrent site, because I don't know a legal torrent site. But it's going the same way.

To get the search url, you could search for foo at the site, and then look at the url. Most of them are clean urls ("domain.com/search/foo") or simple with parameters ("domain.com/?lang=en&q=foo&something=else").
For the first one, your url would be "domain.com/search/" and deluge appends your search pattern (in this case foo) to the url
For the last one, you can change your search pattern with %%quey%%, so your url would be "domain.com/?lang=en&q=%%query%%&something=else" and deluge replaces %%query%% with your search pattern.

Examples:
IsoHunt => http://isohunt.com/torrents/?ihq=%%query%%
MiniNova => http://www.mininova.org/search/?search=%%query%%

Examples:
IsoHunt => http://isohunt.com/torrents/?ihq=%%query%%
MiniNova => http://www.mininova.org/search/?search=%%query%%
There, the %%query%% isn't needed, because when %%query%% isn't found, the pattern will placed at the end of the string, so:
http://isohunt.com/torrents/?ihq=
http://www.mininova.org/search/?search=

Aha! Ok thanks.
But here's another question: Why does deluge always open a search in firefox, and not the specified default browser in your gnome preferences? Really annoying tbh :(

Having one or two search engines in deluge by default would be a good idea so users can try out this feature directly, and get a clue for adding more engines.

I think that the goal of Deluge is, of course, to be the standard bittorrent client for Ubuntu, or even better, for Gnome. If that's going to happen, Ubuntu or Gnome can never provide a client which is promoting to search on sites where you can download illegal stuff.

Ok, I know torrents aren't illegal. And in The Netherlands downloading multimedia isn't even illegal, only the uploading. But it's not completely legal, so it's still a problem..

But is the example for Google (http://google.com/search?q=) not a good one?

mithras hit the nail on the head here. I really can't include search plugins by default, or even provide an example without appearing to support illegal downloading, which of course, I will not do.

That's why I provided the Google example, so that users could add their own plugins

I understand completely, even if you could argue that you could find just as much copyright infringing/illegal/immoral stuff using Google as you can using isoHunt. ;)

Anyway, I did stumble upon this tracker dedicated to GNU/Linux distros
http://linuxtracker.org/ seems good and legal. I did try to find a tracker dedicated to Creative Commons stuff, but I guess thats a niche waiting to be filled.

(The google url example is of course also good, as long as it's included in the program or documentation).

http://www.animesuki.com/

This one only hosts unlicensed anime fansubs. All legal. They drop anything that gets picked up.

Although maybe they would be illegal in Japan... :-k
