A friend of mine got a new laptop. Straight away, we installed Ubuntu on it dual boot, keeping windows so he could game. We then removed from his windows install EVERYTHING that wasn't needed. Outlook express, everything. It has never been connected to a network from windows, and has no virus protection or anything. No security updates, nothing.

All it has is core windows + drivers + GTA3 + CIV4.

And it runs awesomely.

The moral of the story is, don't knock windows. It's great - as long as you don't do ANYTHING with it.

Wouldn't touch it with a bargepole for day to day though lol.

Umm, no. Windows is good. Ubuntu is good. That's all.
No need to not do anything with both of them...

Hmm.. I use Windows for two things: Guild Wars and Ventrilo. Still I need an antivirus client, a firewall and frequent 'security updates'. Oh yes, and I had to reinstall when I switched motherboards. I did not have that kind of trouble with Dapper. :)

Hehe

Very good point, I also have Windows only for games, and it has never run so good for so long.

But I'd rather be rid of it entirely.

I sometimes wonder what people do with Windows to make it run so badly. I have never had a problem with it.

Windows is different to Ubuntu, and of course it has some drawbacks, Ubuntu does too.

But yeah, Windows is GREAT! How many people a day buy things online with their Windows machine? How many offices do their daily tasks on Windows? In a way Windows makes the World go round. At least the desktop world...

I sometimes wonder what people do with Windows to make it run so badly. I have never had a problem with it. I feel the same way about Ubuntu.

When I read complaints about "Why can't Ubuntu just work?" or "Ubuntu sucks!" I think exactly the same thing, "What the hell are you doing to your computer to have all these problems?"

The truth is that no operating system is perfect, and sometimes weird quirks happen, depending on... weird circumstances, hardware combinations, user error... etc.

I've seen perfectly fine Windows installations. I've also seen Windows installations that are completely buggy and spyware-ridden.

In a way it is more understandable for people to have problems with Ubuntu because generally they install it themselves. If everyone installed Windows on their own we'd see more people saying “Why can't Windows not just work?”, “Why do I have to install all those drivers?”, etc...

As for the spyware and viruses, that's Windows' main drawback at the moment. And hopefully Vista will go some way towards fixing that.

Talking of quirks, I'm going nuts over Revver on my Debian machine. Flash 9 Beta works like a dream everywhere else, yet on Revver from time to time it stops, or looses sound. If I try Quicktime I a garbled image and very loud clicking noises. Yet, Tottem works like a dream on Apple's movie trailers site...

I've never had a problem with my Windows. It runs pretty quickly, doesn't blue-screen, nor get malware.

Of course, the reason why it doesn't do all these things is because I never let it touch a single packet from the Internet, and I don't run an internet security suite. Once you've actually brought its security up to a decent level, it runs like a dog.

I dual-boot with windows xp and it is in very good condition with not a single crash since 3 years. I use it for internet, playing media, photo editing and even gaming.

In the past 1 month I have reinstalled Ubuntu twice. Gxine has brought down the whole system once. Within a few days of installation I have had to update to a new version for feature requirements.

Of course I have had lots of crashes and virus attacks before on windows.

The difference IMHO is that to run linux well, u have to be technically adept whereas to run windows well, u just need to be smart!!

that sums it up quite nicely

i've never had any headaches with windows regarding spyware/viruses and i've got it connected to the internet all day long (bittorrent is my best friend)
