Hi,

Just had an idea for the official Wiki, we could create a systems section, and each time you install Ubuntu on a system, you create a page there. What works, what doesn't work, what you had to do, how difficult was it, maybe a photo of it in action.

That way, new users know exactly what to expect when installing Ubuntu on their setup, and can see whether it's worth it or not beforehand.

This will also minimize the "will this work on my system?" threads and the "it doesnt work what do I do" threads in the Beginner sections. :)

Any thoughts?

There's a million and 1 different system combinations with all the hardware out there. It's a good idea, but in pratice I don't think it would work.

I meant for mainstream systems such as the Dell Dimension Range, not for custom built/modified systems.

Mainstream systems only, then.

That would be a stopgap measure. What we need is to notify the hardware manufacturers of what works and what doesn't. Has everyone here done that?

The Dohicky project i believe is trying to accomplish just that, its still in alpha right now but i believe the goal is to create a hardware database, and when you install/run the program, it collects a list of all of your hard ware, and you can give it ratings, state if it worked/ worked out of the box and give comments and suggestions to other users with the same hardware.

Not a good idea then? Sorry. :(

It is a good idea, and would help people like you said - but not everyone runs a stock pc that they brought from a company.

But the people who'd need help do! :)
