I'm one of those who believes that the OS landscape will change gradually, and largely independently of any active steps that most of us can take to promote Linux. The danger is that taking certain steps can actually set back "the cause".

e.g. insisting that all your friends install Linux: this runs the (IMO high) risk that someone who takes your advice runs into some problem, minor or not, goes running back to Windows and forever more has a negative opinion of Linux due to a bad personal experience.

Sadly, I think the biggest draw to Linux (for non-business users) will be games. For corporate users, I think telling them the 100 advantages of using an LTSP thin client system for the basic office user would do a great deal. File LTSP under the 'you can't do that without a ton of cash on windows' heading.

Personally, I just recently sent in a process improvement form at my company earlier this week for the LTSP idea. And the fortune 500 company that I work for hasn't acted on it yet;) (I won't hold my breath;) ) If anybody would like to see the advantages that I listed, just ask, I thought they were compelling;)

Make linux easier to use. (driver installation, software installation, hardware detection, plug'n'play, compatibility for most hardware like windows, etc.)

Ain't gonna happen until hardware companies decides it should.
