mysql port issues

Hi. I am having troubles with mysql on my ubuntu server.

I installed the "automated" LAMP install and everything is going well. but...

I am trying to use the MySQL administrator and query browser (and ODBC too) and I have trouble connecting every time. I believe that my problem may be my port, is it not set to 3306 by default? If you, what does ubuntu set it to? or is there a config file that i could look at that would tell me?
