Matt Zimmerman posted "UDS Mountain View : Call for Topics" to ubuntu-devel-announce.

This is the time to start on your specifications for Edgy+1 = Ubuntu 7.04!

If you want to discuss (your own?) specifications then start a new thread. You can link to your own thread in this thread. But let's not discuss the content of specifications in this thread.

First read the entire post before doing anything. After you have created your new spec please link to it in this thread and please post a short summary.

Take a look here :
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FeatureSpecifications

You can write your specification at :
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/SpecificationName

replace SpecificationName with the name of your specification

Then add it here :
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+addspec

And it will show up here (click on specifications to see how they do it) :
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+specs

This is an official call for topics for the upcoming summit in Mountain
View. If you have a well-defined idea for discussion or development which
you would like to propose for the summit, do not reply to this message, but
follow the process described below.

The primary objective of the summit is to define the release goals for
Ubuntu 7.04, to be released in April 2007. At the summit, the development
team will discuss feature ideas, and create specification documents
describing plans for their implementation.

Anyone is welcome to submit a topic for discussion, but only a limited
number of topics can be covered in the time available at the summit, so the
agenda will be selected from the most appropriate submissions. Topics with
the following attributes are most likely to be prioritized and thus become
successful agenda items:

* Topics submitted by summit attendees: these are most likely to have
critical mass for discussion.

* Topics aligned with the goals of the Ubuntu project:
Bringing the best open source software to the masses and making it easy
for them to use.

* Topics aligned with the goals for the next release:
Ubuntu 7.04 will be characterized by stellar hardware support and
leading-edge desktop technology

* Topics which are clearly explained with a rationale showing the benefit
to Ubuntu:
Your idea can only become reality if it can be readily understood by
others as an important way to improve Ubuntu.

* Topics which require a substantial amount of discussion in order to plan
their implementation:
A trivial or obvious idea which does not require much forethought will
not justify a slot on the agenda.

If you have an idea, it is wise to discuss it on
ubuntu-devel@lists.ubuntu.com to get feedback from others before proposing
it. Topics which have been discussed and rejected before, or which aren't
within the scope of the meeting or the project will not be accepted.

To propose a topic for the agenda:

* Visit https://launchpad.net/sprints/uds-mtv

* If you are attending the summit, ensure that you are registered! This is
important.

* Review the list of topics which are already on the agenda

* Visit https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+specs and register a new
specification. Keep the summary short, but be very clear about the
scope and purpose of the project.

* From the spec view, click "Propose for meeting agenda" to nominate it for
the Mountain View agenda.

The meeting organizers will review all proposals, accept the most promising
ones, and accept them for the agenda.

You can register your specification to the "UDS Mountain View" meeting as Matt explained.

The only thing left is to get enough people who are going to be at UDS Mountain View to subscribe to the specification. That's the hard part.

I'm going to UDS. There are multiple BOF's at the same time so like everyone I have to choose which ones seem to be most interesting.

Please get some video of this event, or blog about it.

In today's world of youtube and google video, not to mention torrents, there is no reason why this event can't be shared to the world!

Oh my, some sérious wireless support! I still need to use the command line to get it working properly, even with wifi-radar or network-manager or whatever...

And I thought the names for the enxt few releases were already set, wasn't Perky Pinguin one of them?

To clarify :
This thread is for specifications only. I will create a sticky for discussing random ideas later(I don't have much time these days).

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=1652035#post1652035 <-- not so much a spec, more of a "oh god please let this happen" thread. :) good luck and enjoy the summit, just read about it and it sounds like it'll be awesome.

Thanks, for making me aware of the USD Mountain View. In response to that I created this spec:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/EasyCollaborationWithJabber

Description:
Jabber (also called XMPP) is an open and standardized IM protocol, which provides a feature called MUC (Multi User Chat), where users can create conference rooms on a jabber server to communicate with each other.
We should consider to deploy this technology.

Ubuntu needs seemless mounting of Windows partitions. People who dual boot shouldn't need to do a lot of config to access their Windows partitions. Linux newbies want to access their old files too.

You might want to add to the Wiki page that we could take the required patches from the latest OpenSuSE as they have done a lot of work on OpenSync integration.

Should cut down on the workload and significantly increase the chances of this happening. It would be good to work with them and upstream to make it happen as syncing with say PDAs is a real weak point and has been for a while.

Patches? What patches?

From the wording of the wiki page, it seems to imply that if you are posting a spec, you intend to implement it. Is this correct or is there a different method for simply posting ideas?

That one is not likely, upstream is still heavily working on the API. I doubt it would be stable enough to start writing code against, as much as I personally love the idea I just don't see it happening for Feisty. Feisty+1 seems more likely.

If you have an idea, it is wise to discuss it on
ubuntu-devel@lists.ubuntu.com to get feedback from others before proposing
it. Topics which have been discussed and rejected before, or which aren't
within the scope of the meeting or the project will not be accepted.

IMHO if you guys are serious about these specs you should try to discuss them on ubuntu-devel. But keep in mind that UDS-mtv is already happening and there is not enough time already to discuss all specs.
