Has someone been able to compile Lightning for x86 64-bit architecture?
Would be great to add it to e.g. Universe.

I haven't seen a 64 bit version yet, probably the only way to run lightning would be to install the 32 bit version of Thunderbird.
However I suggest taking a look at Sunbird (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/sunbird/) in the mean time. I've got that to run rather nicely under Ubuntu 64, you only need to extract the compressed file.
It's like lightning but instead it is its own program.
