but i wondered if there was a way to "Alt-Tab" out so that i can go back to gnome for a bit without closing the game down.

Yes,
Press alt + enter and it will put game in windowed mode. Then hit the ~ key to drop the console.
When the console is dropped you should be able to control your mouse on the desktop and even minumize et to the task bar. The same thing works on quake3 as well.

Hmm, alt enter doesn't seem to work.

ohh it seems that it only works with left alt and enter. mabey my right alt key is broken or not recognized.
