Hey guys,

For us nooooobs:

Why not have a podcast aimed at helping noobies resize their partitions appropriately for Ubuntu Install? Drowing in Ubuntu Forum Posts can be an alarmingly LONG process . . . It seems to me like this should be an easy process, but reading what people have written, gives me pause . . .

Can't I just run the Daper Installer, and when I choose to Manually select my partition, Resize my existing (WinXP) partition to give Ubuntu a home, have no fear my WinXP install will be screwed with, select the newly created partition for Ubuntu, install GRUB, and live happily ever-after???? WHAT'S THE PROBLEM WITH THAT??!?!??

Have I tried? No! I'm scared! It seemed so easy from the installer, so I was about to . . . then I read the forums . . . CRAZY! It's really hard to sift through the forums to find useful info . . . this was the best I could do (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?threadid=16353) . . . and I guess that's what I'll do . . .

Well, it's no podcast, but have you read through this:

May help.

We may have a podcast on that, but a "screencast" seems more appropriate, and this will be done when we get the UbuntuOS video section up :) (ie, so you can see the screen of the computer as well :)).

Thanks for the suggestion.

If you're worried about the Live CD installer, why not try the text-mode installer on the Alternative CD? It's tested much better.

(I think many people's problems come from not defragmenting their Windows partition first).

Yeah well the screenshots in that psychocats post were photoshopped or something. That is not the ubuntu install process that I have seen.

when we meet up next we could go over this and set it up on your laptop. i think the (alt) cd would be a better choice for you to use as it affords more control over the installation.

call me and we will get to the bottom of it asap.

I think many people's problems come from not defragmenting their Windows partition firstAgreed, and I'd add that many people think that one pass at defraging is sufficient. What they don't seem to grasp is that the purpose is to make the data as contigious as possible, that is sitting as far to the left and as much coloured blue as possible. If that takes twenty-five passes, so be it! Then and only then, should it be safe to use the Ubuntu partitioning tool. It is arguable that, slow and cumbersome as it was, the defragmentation tool in Windows 9x was better for this.
