There arn't any included with CE, but you might be able to find a package of them somewhere on the internet.

For a "waiting icon": maybe hands clasped in prayer? Seems more apt than a cross.

That would be a great idea for a cursor.

Indeed, maybe ask Christian Forums if we can take any of their praying icons to use as a cursor.

How would I ask them if you could use one of their icons as a cursor.

I can make a thread on behalf of Ubuntu CE asking about the terms of use if you like.
I'd place it under Welcome to Christian Forums! > CF Support > Discuss Rules & Staff Team Policy (http://www.christianforums.com/f398-discuss-rules-staff-team-policy.html).

Do you people really need a different cursor just because you support a different religion?
In my opinion, it's rather ridiculous. :(
Meh, I'm happy with the originals, if you want custom cursors, that's your choice... but religious ones just seem a little... too far?

Why do you need a whole new operating system for another religion? - Just a question, no insult to anyone intended.

Have you taken the time to read any of the forum posts about this subject (i.e. http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=218724? (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=218724)) Have you read the FAQ page (http://www.whatwouldjesusdownload.com/christianubuntu/2006/07/faq.html) on the Ubuntu CE project site?
I ask these questions because there are lots of people who post without taking a moment to look at the project. They simply base there opinion on the fact that it is Christian or religious and do not even consider how this project and others like it could help spread Open-Source software and Linux to an otherwise untapped market.

What you say may be true in general, but he specified that he is just asking and that he has NO opinion at the moment... so why assume that he is being negative on it?

I was not assuming anything. It is just that the OP's questions did not seem as if they had taken the time to read over any of the projects documentation. These questions have been answered many times. Instead of answering them yet again, I decided to try and guide the OP to some areas that would answer the question for him/her.

First of all I dont use CE.
But from what I have read there are some good ideas here. Instead of trying to find different cursors maybe you could convince someone to whip up a modification to the current Ubuntu cursors. If you took the time to figure out how to make a few cursors on your own then you could open them up as GPL.

I am an artist. I am currently getting into creating things for programs, icons, etc...
I would love to create this for you but I would need a few things:
1. Ideas, do you want a cross or hands instead of the hour glass, etc... I don't want to do something that would end up offending the people I would be making it for.
2. a how to on getting the art to the OS. I have no idea how to put the cursers into the program, so to speak.
Once done I can ad it to gonme-look.org and create a link? (Still new to all this)
Let me know.

Well, for a waiting cursor you might want to have a cross that glows different colors when it loads. Or better. Have a penguin with a cross on the chest.
I'm not totally sure about what a regular cursor might look like.
Maybe have a white cursor, just like any other, and put a very small cross in it.
Anyway, I'm just throwing out ideas.

I like the waiting cursor ideas. I think I will make 2, one a cross that flashes and the other Tux, buy his chest will flash a cross & a fish, back & forth. Maybe a bible terning pages as a third? how do these sound?

Well, that is the question and the problem. I am not a programer. I will make the art/GIF first and then I have to figure out how to package them I will post them here first as GIFs and see what people think. If people like them I will figure out how to package them. The will be free to anyone, so if someone can package them another way than however I figure out how to do it, that would be fine.
Again, if anyone can post a link with instruction on how to package the curser, that would be great. Either way I will have something by the end of the week.

This is a quick sketch I did, I chose the numbers 3 and 7 as they are both considered holy to some. The color will change, as will the size. This will most likely end up black and white, but I liked it as is. The fish would be the arrow/pointer. Let me know what you think.

The fish seems ok, but maybe could have a longer tail section?

If it is the blue you don't like, I will be changing the color. I will also be slowing it down as well. I just did something fast to see what people thought. The fish needs more work than just the tail in my opinion. I was trying to hard for speed and did not get it the way I wanted. I am going to be busy this week, I will check this post, but I won't be able to do any work until Friday or Saturday. If I get any time before that, I want to make a Bible with the pages turning as an alternate to the cross. If enough people like both, I will put out 2 packages, if people don't like one, I will focus on the other.

I just think that the hole thing needs to flash.
The fish does need a a little more of a tail though.

There is a program called gcursors, they work with most standard packages (like the ones you get at gnome-look.org)

For a cursor theme its basically a folder you put into ~/.icons with the name of the theme. Inside of that is a cursors folder (holds the images) and an index.theme file, which contains something like,
[Icon Theme]
Name=pCircle-24
Comment=Pinux's Circle cursors
Example=arrow
For system-wide use you can edit the /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme file to contain something similar to what is above, and put your cursors in /usr/share/icons/NAME/cursors
And yes gcursor is a nice app that lets you choose between cursors you install in ~/.icons.
Darrious
November 24th, 2006, 01:21 PM
Is there some type of compiler or something where you just have the images and you can assign the images to a certain function then it compiles everything for you.
It would create the index.theme file and everything. Then install it using gcursor.

Just to give an update, I am still working on the Christian Cursors. My Internet got shut down for not paying my December bill (yes, I know it is December 2nd, they messed up and now I pay $2 less a month.) I will have it back up by Thursday of Friday of next week. Once it is back up I will be putting something up at gnome-look.org (hopefully everything will go well). Sorry it is talking so long. I will post a link once it is done. If someone else gets something else done first, that would be cool too. I really don't think there can be too many cursor options out there.

An update...
It sounds like Darrious has gotten farther than I have. I just do not have the time I wish I did to get this done. I am still working on it, but my school schedule is keeping me very busy. I usually hang out in the forums at work and I can't do any of these type of projects there. Once home it is homework time, with an occasional break in the forums. Sorry. I am trying to get ahead so I can get this finished. If anyone wants the art work I have so they can make it work, let me know, and let me know how to get it to you. I have a better fish done, but the cross is the same.
Again, sorry.

I was planing on just downloading a cursor from gnome-look.org with a license that would let me replace the cursors I made, and not switch the whole thing. Don't know if that is really possible, but it works for the icons.

Just looking for an up date. I stopped working on it after posting the pointer and crosses. Was a way found to make the cursors work?
Also, I did not think of this before, but if you need me to make more, so they all match, let me know. And if you are not going to use them, if you could let me know how they are made, as I have a few ideas on some other cursor themes, but have no idea where to start.
Thanks! :)

If you have a cursor set you want to use, you should (if I remember right) be able to set that through Gnome's preference menus. On the other hand, if you don't use Gnome (like me ;) ), you can set the default cursor theme in a file called .Xdefaults ...
Decompress your cursor package into the .icons folder in your home folder; if you want it to be available to all users, decompress it to /usr/share/icons/ (I think that's right).
Then look for a hidden file called .Xdefaults in your home directory. Open it (with gedit or nano or leafpad or ... :D ) and add this line:
Xcursor.theme:name_of_the_theme_you_want_to_use
Make sure you use the name of the folder that was created inside .icons when you decompressed the package.
As an example, I really like jimmac's new Vanilla-DMZ icon set (http://jimmac.musichall.cz/themes.php?skin=7). Download it, and decompress it to the .icons folder in your home directory like this:
tar -xvf vanilla-dmz-0.4.tar.bz2 -C ~/.icons/
(You need to make the .icons directory first, if you haven't already.) Now edit your .Xdefaults file.
nano -w .Xdefaults
Add this.
Xcursor.theme:Vanilla-DMZ
When you restart X, you should get the new cursor theme. It's possible there's a way to apply the new theme without restarting X, but I haven't run across it yet.
As far as making a new cursor set, I couldn't tell you what size or array they need to be. If it were me, I'd look for a set, decompress it and see what sizes or formats they use in it. jimmac's set is probably a good example since a lot of those themes are for big projects.
Hope that helps!

I was (and am) still learning GIMP when I made these, so I used GIMP and another photo editor on my XP box together to get it done. Though you could make these on GIMP, I now know.
