I have a Powerbook G4 and I am curious if it is possible to replace my airport extreme card with a different mini-pci card (say for example one that is fully supported by linux).

I know this seems like a drastic measure but I have attempted just about every post I could find to try and get the airport extreme card working (along with WPA). And not a single one of them did me any good.

](*,)

Maybe I have a few screws loose in the old noggin' but either way I don't want to have to bend over backwards and jump through hoops just to get my wireless connection working efficiently. I want it to just work.

So, then instead of trying to hack my way through a makeshift configuration, can I just replace the entire card? And if so, what are some mini-pci cards that are fully compatible and capable of running WPA with linux?

Unfortunately, you can't.

The Airport Slot is not an ordinary Mini-PCI slot.
I can't remember what exactly they have hacked, but its almost identical to a mini-pci slot, with enough (hardware) differences to make it probably impossible to stick some other card in your Mac and get it over with stupid hardware vendors.

Ahh...:-?

I do not know if any extremely dangerous hw hack is possible on the user's side, but as mac hardware is most of the times kind of pricey, I haven't heard of anyone who tried to screw with their mac this way.

I had a feeling that was the case, but I figured I would ask anyway.

As it turns out I was actually able to get the card working following this post:

I think I actually attempted it 3 times before it finally worked with gnome network manager. Not sure what I did different that last time, but oh well, at least it works now.

Now I am just having trouble with WPA. Network manager sees my network and also knows that it is encrypted with WPA but it still will not connect...
