blues rock (Eric Gales, Kenny Wayne Sheppard, Stevie Ray Vaughn)
classic rock (CSN, Beatles)

You get the idea.

Metallica, G-n-R, Nirvana -- Oldies?

I must confess I've never heard of many of the bands listed in this thread. C'mon - I am NOT OLD!

OK -- here's what I like:
Music. I like anything that shakes my butt, or helps me feel, but mostly - I like Jazz, Classical, Blues, Folk, Roots..and good old Rock and/or Roll. There's a special somethin' somethin' that Gospel has going for it as well..the passion, I think... and sometimes nothing beats an opera.

Mariah Carey may be hot, and have a stellar voice - but you won't catch me listening to that claptrap.

Oh - there's this song that always makes me cry...
"...You're in the arms of the angels,
may you find - some comfort here."

Thankfully I don't hear it much.

Ray Charles - RIP

Rock On

Cannot abide pop music -- "I fsk'd the girl in Hansen" is a really funny t-shirt (tshirthell)

Christian rock - POD, Kutless, Chevelle, Skillet, Lifehouse, Disciple, Newsboys, Jeremy Camp, David Crowder, DC Talk, OC Supertones, Day of Fire, Further Seems Forever, Juliana Theory, Jars of Clay, PAX217, Project 86, Demon Hunter, Dead Poetic, and the list goes on and on....

Worship- Third Day, Caedmon's Call, Chris Tomlin, etc...

Classical- Mozart, Vivaldi, Beethovan, Saint-saans, Carl Orff, random opera...

Classic Rock- The Who, Beatles, Bob Seeger and silver bullet band, Eric Clapton is one of my idols... etc...

Rap is crap.... in my opinion horrible in any form....

OK question to you oddabe19. Are POD, Chevelle, Lifehouse, and Juliana Theory really Christian Rock? I have a Chevelle cd, and I've listened to a lot of POD, and I've never heard much of a religious message.

But yeah, I'm not even Christian, but Jars of Clay and the OC Supertones rock hard! I heard the Newsboys once or twice and couldn't stop laughing, I mean they wrote a song about how there's no Captain Crunch cereal in Hell, I think they're running out of ideas. Not dissing religious music at all, just saying basically I respect what they're doing, I just don't think they're good at it ;)

POD, Chevelle, Switchfoot ARE christian rock, there has been ALOT of crossover music in recent years. POD has like 8 albums, but only 3 of which are in the mainstream market. They don't have to have a 'God is good, etc' religious message to be considered christian rock... and usually they do have a religious message, you just can't pick up on it a lot of times. Jars of Clay went mainstream once with 'Flood' in the early 90's. So did DC Talk. Most were signed with a company called 'Tooth and Nail Records', and they're pretty strict about who they consider for their label, they dropped Juliana Theory because they were getting too secular for their tastes... but POD left in favor of Atlantic Records.

www.christianrock.net is where i do most of my listeining, and if you go through their lists of artists you'll find alot of familiar bands that went secular as well. But they only play christian music.

Music doesn't even have to be 'Christian' to be popular among christians... Linkin Park and U2 are really big with christians because of clean lyrics and generally good messages.

Newsboys writes some serious stuff and some goofy stuff... and 'Breakfast' which is what you're talking about is one of their goofier songs about a friend who died and they didn't know where he was going... etc... etc... but it's not one of my favorite songs. Jars of Clay and Supertones, usually have a religious message in almost all songs.... but yeah, they are awesome.

OK, that makes more sense. I'm just very glad you never mentioned Creed. They said over and over "We are NOT a Christian band" but then had religious messages, but it always felt like they were trying to milk the Christian message to make money. Bah. I'm glad they split up, I freakin' can't stand Scott Stapp.

Linkin Park kinda surprises me. My interpretation of "Breaking the Habit" was that he was talking about killing himself, and some of the other songs seem quite angry. Most of the songs have some message in them, some resolution I guess, so I guess the topic is less important than the message from the topic... if that makes sense.

I am not currently overly excited about any one type of music or band. I mostly listened to a variety of music that I have grown up listening to which makes for a wide variety considering how fads have changed (yes, much to my own disappoval, my tastes have been influenced by others).

Anyway, I will always like Metallica. I have also recently started to listen to Spiderbait. Any other Spiderbait fans out there?

Currently, in no order:
Aqueduct
The Zutons
Outkast
Green Day
Metallica (getting back into them-- I used to be quite the metalhead)

All time faves (that aren't listed above):
COWBOY MOUTH (just listen and you will know, oh yes)
Cake
The Refreshments (been wanting to listen to them lately)
Ben Folds (and Ben Folds Five)
Prozaac (Simon and Milo, in the US)
Ani D (she can do amazing things with a guitar)
Zox (fan-freakin-tastic)
Hobex (spent about an hour talking to the lead singer before the show-- then they played for like 4 hours!!)
Aerosmith
The Who
Nirvana
The Prodigy
NIN
The D (as in Tenacious. They rock hard. Jack Black has an AMAZING voice. Who'd a thunk it)
William Shatner (the people on his album anyway)
They Might Be Giants
Weezer
Buckethead

Errrmmm... stopping now ;)

Bands that are overrated:
Creed
Limp Bizkit (sorry kass)
U2, in a way. I love them, but lately it seems like their losing it
Anything that can be described as "bubblegum pop"
Creed
Anything that makes the lead singer puke blood (read: Linkin Park. I tried this. You can literally take the lyrics from most linkin park songs and sing them in other songs. Why would you want to listen to something that's the same all the time?)
Creed
Oh, and Scott Stapp's solo album (the guy from Creed)

I actually like the first Bizkit CD. Still listen to it occasionaly.

Oh, and another for my overrated:
Staind.

Aaron Lewis of Staind happened to be playing near the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where Steven Tyler of Aerosmith was visiting. Earlier in the day he sent one of his lackies to get Steven Tyler and bring him back to his dressing room because Aaron wanted to meet him. This was after telling the owner of whatever venue they were playing at that the opening band wasn't good enough for them.

Steven Tyler replied to the lackie, something like this: What the ****? He sent you to get me and bring me back to him? Tell him to get his *** over here and do it himself! And tell him I heard what he did with the opening band. Remind him that he was once in the same place as that band, and pretty ******* soon he's going to be right back in that same place."

Staind's been repetitive, as well. The first thousand repetitions weren't too bad. every one after that has been worse.

I've been getting more and more local in my musical tastes (see my five picks), and have been ignoring radio/tv/etc for a while. It's kept me happier.

Bizkit's been overrated for ages. I only heard of them because they were associated with KoRn and the Family Values tour for a while.

Bizkit's been overrated from day one, just like the rest of that rap-rock subgenre, or nu metal, or whatever the dark eternal the no-talent assclowns at record companies want to call it. Death to false metal!!

heh, imagine what would have happened back in the 80s/early 90s if someone like Bizkit opened for Metallica/Pantera/Sepultura/other metal. There would have been a riot.

Please. If Bizkit had opened for Iron Maiden, Bruce Dickinson would have cornered Fred Durst backstage and run him through.

ENOUGH with the bizkit bashing!

Do you see me going on about how much Green Day irritates the living crap out of me? Or how I think I've seen more talent in my cat than most "metal" ...?

Noooooo.

So you all can just stop bashing anyone's choices whatsoever. It's great you have an opinion, but c'mon have some respect for OTHER people's choices in music.

So knock it off.

(Knew I forgot one in my list... KoRn)

nu-metal isn't really all that metal at all. Just about the only resemblance I can find is heavy distortion and drop-D tuning. Otherwise, they're really very different.

Skillful use of preterition, kass.

It's easy to kick Bizkit because they are so overexposed...in a way, they're a much easier target than, say, uhhh...Ghosts of Pasha (http://www.ghostsofpasha.com/) .

I should point out that this statement wasn't really qualitative about Bizkit-- more an observation about metal mentality.

I don't care what REAL metal is. I just care about whether or not I like a band. If a band plays polka-metal, I'll listen to it if I like it. Why swear off a band just because they're nu-metal or whatever? I like SOME of it.

Or how I think I've seen more talent in my cat than most "metal" ...?

I think I've seen more talent in your cat than most popular music period. there just isn't that much popular music that's worth a crap anymore. And that's sad. I've had to seek it out, which brings a heightened appreciation of music along with it. Seriously, your cat can turn itself into a ghost! And with nothing more than a little bit of flour!

If Eazy-E tought me one thing, I'm not a 'playa hayta'. I'll admit to singing along to Dirst's "rollin'" in my '64 impala with my windows down and the switches lowered. Who didn't? However, early Green Day felt like someone was sticking an icepick through my eardrums when they hit the 'waves back in the 90's. What a change though. I actually look forward to hearing a hit from their latest album while the playlist on GoFM streams through my beep media player. Even some of the greatest artists hit and miss with some of their album releases. 'The Spaghetti Incident (http://ourlyrics.net/album_guns_n_roses_the_spaghetti_incident)' anyone?

Hey, if you think the Bizkit bashing is bad here, you should see the bashing I took on FARK when I admitted that I was a fan of Nightwish and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Do you see me going on about how much Green Day irritates the living crap out of me? Or how I think I've seen more talent in my cat than most "metal" ...?

No, but go right ahead. Green Day annoys me too; I wonder how critics could call these guys punk, as if they earned the right to be mentioned in the same context as the Clash and the Ramones. And I freely admit that my cat's a better programmer and singer than I am.

It's great you have an opinion, but c'mon have some respect for OTHER people's choices in music.

You want an opinion? Here's an opinion for you: Most American rock musicians wouldn't know heavy metal if it fell from the sky and smeared their charred remains across the bottom of a crater. :)

I was introduced to his music because I'm an ice hockey fan, and "The Hockey Song" kept getting played at San Jose Sharks games. But some of his other stuff (like "I've Been Everywhere") got me hooked on his music for good.

Wouldn't even know where to start...

My playlist has everything from Tori Amos to Chemlab to Weezer to Dead Can Dance to Our Lady Peace to Quiet Riot...

I noticed someone had listed Jamiroqui. If you like them, check out a band called Tortured Soul (www.torturedsoulmusic.com). They're a house group, but instead of being done on synths and drum machines and what not, it's an actual pianist, drummer, and bassist. Freaking awesome. PM me and I'll send you some tracks if you want.

A Hard Day's Night
A Day In The Life
Helter Skelter
I Am The Walrus
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
