I'm finally doing it, this Christmas I'm getting a new desktop from System76 (http://www.system76.com) and making the jump from Windows to Ubuntu. I'm already running Ubuntu on my laptop and have been for about a month now, so I have the basics down.

But anyway, when I get my new desktop, I'm gonna start handing over the $5 a month for the Cedega releases. But since gaming is the most major part of what I do, I was wondering how well Steam ran under Ubuntu with Cedega. I mainly play GoldSRC games, but I'm occasionally found playing something on Source.

This is the desktop I'm more than likely going to get: Link (http://system76.com/product_info.php/cPath/2/products_id/170)

Thanks in advance for any advice ;) I'm really looking forward to letting Windows go for good.

ick... no P4 3.2+ ghzs?! only a meer 2.4? sheesh! oh and i dont know about steam wht cedega.... but i do know people use steam with wine. Why pay for cedega?! all it is is a front end for wine with some DX support... But Cheers on making the switch! Im just waiting for my windows box to get so slow and bogged down that I will install ubuntu on it and be done with it all! :)

Sorry, I have a budget to watch. Plus, that computer isn't bad for the final price tag ($924) after I configure it. I was going to get Cedega because I heard WINE wasn't always good with games. But I guess I'll have to wait and see when I get the computer. I would install Ubuntu on my current desktop, but it has a Soundblaster X-Fi which sadly isn't supported yet.

Im running CS:Source, DoD:Source and HL2 with minimal issues on cedega, actually in contrast with what everyone says about cedega i was actually very pleased with it. I have also tried cs source with wine and after some tweaking it ran reasonably well.
Wish you luck on your switch.

I ran CS:S on Dapper via Cedega...the only issue I really had was Fonts, and that was fixed fairly easily. All the other HL/HL2 titles ran well, or better than on XP when running on Cedega. Red Orchestra I never got running. SiN, never tried.

One trick you might want to learn is using WINE to install HL2 mods into your Cedega Valve folder, since doing that via Cedega is a PITA.

I'm currently running CS:S on XP while I wait for Edgy to go final. Once that happens.....I'll move back.

Agreed. World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, and Steam all ran just fine on Dapper.

I get the political/philosophical reasons for not liking Cedega, but I really do not want to go through hoops with WINE to get a game to run.

Cedega works, and on supported titles, works well.

Thanks for all the advice. I suppose for now, I'll leave this an open ended decision and decide when I get there. Plus, I'm pretty sure Edgy will be out by the time I get my new computer.

Counterstrike 1.6 ran fine for me with cedega, as well as steam. Steam had a little issue the first time i loaded, I just closed and reopened and now I play CS 1.6 with steam no issues at all.
