Personally, I think the distro doesn't matter. KDE is an application (desktop environment) running on your computer. For the most part, you will not notice a difference.

Things that you will notice in distros, is the way packages are managed, not specific applications. What might be different is the current version that the distro is using.

The distro actually makes a big difference. Kubuntu is slow. Mepis is fast. There are plenty of other distros for which KDE is faster than it is on Kubuntu.

I really like it in mepis. I had freebsd going for a short while with kde, I really liked it with that. Ran great. At the moment Ive replaced freebsd with desktopbsd, same thing but with a better package manager. Well I suppose its the same package manager but the front end for it is better.
In short Id have to say from what Ive used Mepis does kde justice.

in the past, i've installed kde-core, but i just installed kubuntu-desktop, instead, and i notice a lot of differences. i'm sure there are different ways to set it up in default, so that was the origin of my question. kde-core, on my laptop, runs much differently from kde on my old desktop, so i'm guessing hardware can be a consideration as well.

btw, i'm liking kubuntu a lot.

I would have to say pclinuxos seemed to me to be the best kde out of the box. I really liked there mini versions and they give you a choose of 3 levels of kde. No other distro gives you that many choose's for kde. ;)

I would do edgy/dapper+server+kde-core if i wanted to install kde though. I'm a control freak when it comes to my system and would much rather build it up my way.

Slax (http://www.slax.org). I can run Slax on a 300Mhz laptop without a hard drive and the desktop is beautiful. All that from a NeoMagic 2200 graphics card, too. I was impressed.

i would say that suse is the best kde (apart from the slowness of login and yast).

The most fast KDE ive used was on KANOTIX.

K.Mandla, What version of SLAX did you use on that old laptop? Was it KDE, Flux, or XFCE? Thnaks

Definitely SLAX - speed with great look & feel, without loosing functionality. Yoper is also very good but it's a little old now. I don't like many of the newer KDE distros (inc. Kubuntu), they're far too bloated & quite sluggish on my laptop. Even a 'kdebase' install feels bloated, I know that Gnome has bloat but it doesn't get in my way.

I tried both the Standard and Server CDs, and started both the KDE and Fluxbox desktops off the Standard CD. I didn't see any great improvement in Fluxbox over KDE, which is unusual since I think of KDE and glitz and Flux as sheer function.

But the KDE desktop was clean and attractive and the visual effects (like the fade-in tooltips) worked perfectly with no lag. I really expected some stutter on a non-mainstream video card at 800x600 and 300Mhz.

Package management was a bit alien for me, but I'm willing to learn. I might play with it some more, since knocking down Xubuntu to keep that machine happy takes more time than just booting Slax. ;)

I'm not a KDE fan nor have I used KDE much.

But I think, apart from the default Konqueror two-pane setup, the latest version of SimplyMEPIS has a better setup of KDE than Kubuntu or Knoppix.

SabayonLinux does KDE the best.

SimpleMepis does it the worst.

but PC-BSD is pretty damn sweet and gives Linux a stiff competition.

what makes you think that?

SabayonLinux does KDE the best.

I agree 100 %. There are alot of problems with their actual distribution since it is fairly new but it is nice. That's a statement from a Gnome user.

I also prefer Gnome but SabayonLinux and Knoppix have warmed my heart to KDE.

Dreamlinux and Aquamorph, are the best for XFCE. Aquamorph has done the best XFCE (but then that is another thread)

Inspired from the "Who does KDE the best?" Thread...

Basic question: which distro according to you and your experience does XFCE the best?

Thanks for sharing, that was very interesting.

Personally, I think Mepis does KDE better than any KDE based distro I've tried, based on how it works on _my_ system. That is not saying that it will be good for _all_ systems, but from what I've seen of it it's fast, stable and easy to use, which is what's most important to me, seeing that I want a computer I can use without having to fiddle around with it too much.

Same here. Clearly yozef had a really bad experience with Mepis, but it works well for a lot of people, including me.

I really like kubuntu as a kde distro. It's clean. Not a full kde desktop, but an excellent choice of applications, and not _too_ customized.
One thing i hate about kubuntu, is adept-updater. I rather update when i start adept. Also adpet seems to bail out from time to time. You sit and stare at the bouncing cursor and waiting for something to happen.
I've noticed that kubuntu edgy (beta) starts this guidance power manager by default, and you can't even turn it off. The icon is really ugly as well. I'm _not_ to fond of the new "configure system" panel either.
These last examples is exactly such things that keep me away from the new kubuntu i'm afraid.

Arch kde unfortunately isn't using split packages. If it was, i'd probably give it all my time. Obviously arch is not very newbie friendly (very _user_ friendly though). This is of course all i686 optimized, and bleeding edge software, so it's very up to date, and also by far, the "fastest" kde i've ever tried out.

yozef must be on another level than me (and a also few others i suspect), as i see a pattern to the distros he like. Hes most certainly not alone in that regard... what i mean is full blown (and customized) distros like pclinuxOS , Sabayon and dreamlinux is so far off my K.I.S.S. perspective, it get's in _my_ way. (No disrecpect yozef, i'm just saying were different, and that is a _good_ thing :). whatever floats _your_ boat!)

Now, i've never tried mepis out, and after hearing such good thing about it, i think i will give it a try....

Haha, that's something quite a few do... I downloaded and tried Berry Linux just because of the cute kitten on the default desktop... *likes kitten, disliked the OS*

Hi I have used KDE on a P2-350 with 256megs ram and it ran though a tad slugish wich I find amazing as I would not even try XP on that system.

Also I have ran KDE on a P4-1.6ghz with 256megs ram and compared to XP it was lightning fast where XP was very slugish. In XP the menu took a long time to launch. Enyways I found KDE much faster and nicer as I prefear the look compared to XP.

Also my experience with Fedora core 5 with KDE I found the package manager took for ever to load.

Also I have heard that actually installing with the Kubuntu CD was supposidly faster than adding KDE to Ubuntu, anyone have any info on this?

I really like the KDE that ships with Slackware because it is a vanilla KDE with no enhancements/alterations. It is shipped exactly as the developers envisioned. KDE under Slackware is very fast and responsive.
