I am looking for an online multiplayer game for my nephew, who is 8. He likes to play "TOONTOWN", some Disney massively multiplayer game that runs in XP.
But I switched my mom's computer to Ubuntu and would like to find a game for him to play when he is at her house.
I am looking for something fun but not too complex or violent. Also, something that doesn't need huge resources (the computer has 256 MB RAM).
An ideas, Ubuntu gamers?

Battle for Wesnoth might be good.. it is not a MMORPG but it is a good turnbased rpg strategy game.
Also, check out Eternal Lands for an OSS MMORPG.
And check out Tremulous for an OSS FPS..not too violent, humans on aliens, not too much blood, my 8 year old cousin luvs it!

Any hints about how to install these? I see they are not in the repos...at least not for Dapper.

Sry bout that.
Battle for Wesnoth is in the repos..
Search synaptic for "wesnoth"...I can't get to synaptic right now or I would tell you to apt-get it.
Tremulous : Get the linux version from here : http://tremulous.net/index.php?section=files
and download it.
Then run it from a terminal like this : sh tremulous*.run from the directory you downloaded it in.
Eternal Lands : http://www.eternal-lands.com/page/download.php - Linux commands and link down the page.
Also search synaptic for more games..there are classics like Frozen Bubble, etc, fish-fillets-ng that are very enjoyable.
Also, check out happypenguin.org

You'll want to play these games yourself before giving them to a kid. Whether Tremulous is appropriate for an 8 year old is... a judgement call. Ditto any MMOs like Eternal Lands.
Also, Wesnoth might be a little complicated. There are lots of great games on HappyPenguin, so look around there.

Aye..well I don't know your position about these games..imho, if there is no blood or human-human violence then it is ok....but you might want to check yourself.

I completely agree, but a lot of people don't. I think Tremulous is fine for most 8 year olds. Then again, I'm not a parent. ;)
If Tremulous was released as a commercial game, it would receive a T rating (US ESRB system). That means 13+. Now, I know one 7 year old who plays Doom III (M, 18+) with his dad, so the lines are obviously vague. The best solution is for the parent to play most games first.
MMOs are significantly more risky. You can see anything on one of those (see Second Life).

My son started playing Quake3 multiplayer at 4. He always loved games like that. We had 3 pc's setup in the dining room and my son , my brother and myself would spend all weekend playing online together. When Americas Army came out we started that as well. Good family fun.
