Ubuntu is different from Windows. It would depend on what your purpose for your computer is to know which one is right for you.

Neither is better, they are different and one might suit a certain user better than the other. That's all.

Obviously, Ubuntu is better than Windows because of the reasons you mentioned... and more.
Here's what you get with Ubuntu:
1. A free OS with every program you need
2. You can download anything you need for FREE!!!!
3. Awesome community :D
4. Bugs fixed within hours
5. Frequent updates
6. And lastly can a company comptete with an active community of developers??!!!

Ubuntu is better than Windows for me. Windows might be better than Ubuntu for someone else.
It all depends on what you need and what you like. Give it a shot. Try out the live CD, and if you don't like it, don't install it. If you install it and have some trouble (new users often do), ask for help. We'll do our best!

Depends on what hardware you have, what tasks you do, and your level of experience.

Unless you like playing with text-files, I'd steer away linux/ubuntu. Not everyone's lucky with "oh, my hardware works perfectly out-of-box, best system evah! <3 <3 <3". Some of us have/had to do research to make some supported, but working wrong way by default, hw to function properly. Searching the right config-files, researching paremetres...that sort of thing.

You should probably rephrase that to something like: "Unless your hardware works with the Live-CD, steer away from Ubuntu". And that would be a wise recommendation.
If the hardware works as expected with the Live-CD, there is no need to edit text-files and hence there is no need to steer away from Ubuntu. If anything, with compatible hardware, Ubuntu will be easier to install, configure and maintain than Windows.
Not that editing text files is such a traumatic experience, many prefer that to going through a forest of dialogues...

These posts annoy me. No matter how hard you try, you wonīt be able to convert people to Linux who donīt want to be converted. Trust me, Iīve tried.
You may as well get on with it.

Neither is better, for me and mineubuntu is better, and I will tell you why. (I am not bashing here, I am speaking from my experiance, and what I know)
Everything I did in windows I can do in ubuntu (including games) HL2, WOW,and CS:S all work better under wine than on my XP. The reason I made the switch was not only was my XP box FULL of pirated software (which is illegal) and I was tired of maintaining the OS. On XP boot times were continually slowing, due to EVERY app that you install wants to start on startup, and from antivirus eating resources. Then there was the fact that no matter how safe one is on the internet, you WILL get spyware/malware/adware, so there was the once a week spyware scan that could not be thorough with out the help of multiple apps (there is not one app that removes all spyware so you need to use multiple)
When I ran into issues with XP I didn't have a huge community to help me through the issues, I had to pray to find an .exe patch somewhere, and pray to the PC gods that it wasn't full of useless BS.
IME Windows is more difficult to configure than any install of ubuntu I have done. Most peeps by a PC with XP preinstalled so everything works.....until something goes wrong, which in most cases you have to use your handy dandy restore XP cd that puts the PC back to its factory defaults with all of the useless wares that come pre-installed on these machines, which you do NOT get with linux.
Heck in the new issue of PC magazine there is an article called "fix Vistas Annoyances" in this article there is some tips to better your Vista experiance. There is a section called "Gentle Reminders" which speaks of the helpful balloons that pop-up to help you navigate the OS. If you are using the home edition of Vista you can only disable these annoyances by opening up the registry editor and setting DWORD values. IME the registry is not somewhere that your average user should EVER go, one slip here and you are SOL. Now how silly is that? Some say linux sux due to having to use the terminal, but if I have my choice of doing things in the terminal versus hacking a windows registry, well thats an obvious one.
I see alot of people saying how Windows is better because it has more hardware compatibility, this may be true. But now if most hardware was manufactured to ubuntu specifications then that would not be the case.
In other words the only reason that windows looks better(in terms of hardware, drivers etc) is because they paved that way for themselves, and they certainly only had themselves in mind!

depends on what you're looking for mainly. i've had better luck with linux on all my pcs. it may be just me but theres always a sense of security and freedom when you can do what you want especially on a computer.

i dont think either is better, they both serve there purpose.it is all down to individual choice..
linux does not get spyware, viruses, adware(and i say that in the broad sence,i know there are viruses for linux)
and is generally more stable.
but windows can be made safe,as long as you follow a few safe browsing rules..if not you just need a damn good firewall, virus program and a spyware detecter..
and chocolate is definatly better than vanilla..:D

Let me try my points..
1.Why should we waste so much money on OS if we getting better option at free of cost.. Thogh a bit different than Windows but its fun ...
2.Windows system whether its XP or Vista both require hefty hardware which is not a case with Ubuntu ;)
3. While if you consider gaming then get a COnsole I bet you won't get that Glow and Fun in Vista with same price spent.,
4. Windows is unstable a bit low system and boom it hangs.. I left windows past year cause of this.. Now in same hardware Ubuntu never hangs ..
5. We wont get all those goodies for free in Vista or XP.. Like Compiz Fusion or Berly[old 1]
Ubuntu FTW for Students, Coders, and all those who do not game.. while for gamers get console and do not drool for windows its just a piece of crap that burn the pockets of a lay man :p

What do you want from your PC?
virus/addware free? + Ubuntu - windows
Latest games? - Ubuntu +windos
Surfing/mail/wordprocessing? Ubuntu and Windows +
Cost (cheap)? + Ubuntu -- Windows
....
The list goes on.
Generally speaking. Ubuntu is more stable, doesn't slow down over time, can be left running for ages, ...
Windows allows you to walk into any pc store and buy whatever HW the shop moron is trying to sell you. Almost every piece of HW is shipped with Windows drivers. Linux drivers are usually a community effort or come later.

in fact Windows XP has modest hardware requirements:
Recommended:
Processor 300 MHz or higher
128 MB RAM or higher
Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher resolution
Hdd space 1.5 GB or higher
these can hardly be called hefty hardware
Vista it a total different thing from XP, though

hmm... OK I'll start by saying that I use Ubuntu for more than a year now and it works fine-ish (well Feisty had some issues which are gone now)
I think that one point is being neglected in this posts and that is a certain lack of software for Linux, you can use wine and reduce that but still if you are looking for a specific application that isn't that main-stream you will probably run out of luck quickly ... I could start a list here (but I fell that I don't have too) So in general if you don't need a specific application and are fine with the general stuff like writing documents downloading surfing, watching movies ect ... than by all means download Ubuntu and try it out! If on the other hand you need a specific program ... there is always the option of sticking with windows or double booting.

it's true that for a smooth ride with xp you'd probably need 512 mb ram

Is Ubuntu batter than Windows? Well, as many have indicated it depends on what your needs and requirements are but I'll give you a practical example. This old Compaq laptop (800mhz, 320mb RAM) I am posting from was relegated to a closet until I tried Ubuntu on it. When I bought it it had Windows ME arguable one of the worst versions of Windows ever. It ran very poorly and had frequent Blue screens of death (BSOD). I used the free upgrade to XP on it and things got worse. Constant freeze ups. Now, I am a retired IT specialists who supported all MS products since DOS 2.1 have had all the MS Windows training so I know my way around Windows. I could not make XP stable on this machine.
Now I run Ubuntu 6.10 and with Automatix2 I have everything I need and it runs for days at a time between the times I shut it down with out a single problem. So in this instance Ubuntu is far and away better than Windows. I hope it works out for you as well .
Is Ubuntu better than Windows? I think so but I also know it is not perfect nor will it meet everyone's needs today but it keeps getting better all the time.
