A friend of mine sent me the IP address of a server she uses for Wolfenstein: E.T. When I try to connect, it says that I'm using an incompatible protocol or something. Is this a Linux / Windows issue, or something else?

Thanks!

can't this be a version conflict within ET ? Check you local version to the server version ...

I haven't heard of any Windows/Linux compatiblity issues in multiplayer games. Look at Tremulous and Nexuiz. They both work great and support Windows, Mac, and Linux.

I can confirm that ET works flawlessly between Linux, Windows, and Mac clients.

I confirm this as well, for the record. I (until the semester started up again) was a very frequent ET player, and never once had an OS related issue.

Does anybody have an IP address I can try to connect to? The ones I'm trying are either saying there's an incompatibility, or they require a password.

There are lots of good servers in the server list. You can set up a filter so you don't see the private servers.

If you see a lot of incompatibility warnings, you may be running an old version. I think the most recent version is 2.60 (but I haven't checked in a while).

Thanks for the tip about filtering private servers... I'll use that now! When I get back to my Ubuntu machine, I'll check the software version, though I did just install the program last week, and installed a patch or update immediately following.

The other possibility is that you don't have punkbuster installed. Though I always thought it'd tell you if that were the case.

No, if you get a incompatible version on a server, it means either the server or you dont have all the patches required, installed.

I have 2 computers, one running Ubuntu and the other running Windows XP, behind a router. Both of these are running the ET 2.60 version.

I get completely different server lists on each box.

If I connect the Ubuntu box to a server, that server doesn't even show on the XP box. When I try and manually connect to the server IP on the Windows box, I get the incompatible version number.

This all leads me to believe that there is some difference in the clients/servers. ](*,)

About the only ET I play, is the TrueCombat:Elete total conversion. Quite a few are on some flavor of a *nix box, matter of fact, a good buddy I met on one of the servers, refered me to Ubuntu, he frags with it himself. TC:E also sports a mac version as well. The only diff, so far, he told me he doesnt have a console.

Might wanna head to www.truecombat.com , post your question there. a direct link to their Linux tech support ( http://www.truecombatelite.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=9&sid=c3a917dc7a79531bbd83b52ae15d7688 )

You can also shoot over to the IRC channel, where you can get some help, depending when the right ppl are there
official IRC channel, #TC:Elite @ Quakenet.org . there good ppl, Im shure theyd be happy to help you out.

I believe these few are linix users,
LordOfKaos Public Relations, Web Programming, Technical Support
bs File Management and Beta Team Manager

Have you tried your boxes on a lan server? it may be, a networking problem, the router specifically...

Good Luck!

ET is about the only game I play. I dual boot and play on Windows and Linux. I always play on the same servers with either OS it makes no difference. I even use the same exact config and etkey so I can save my xp at xp-save servers. Sounds to me like you haven't updated to 2.60.
