The original UT is still my favorite video game of all time, but I'm thinking it might be time to pick up one of the later releases. I've messed around with the demos a little, and the prices are definitely good these days, but I'm just not sure which version to go for.
So which do you like best, and why?

Yep, UT2004 is gooooooooooood. Just get the DVD version to save you changing all the CDs.
Tried UT2003, had no vehicles.
vehicles = goodness = vehicular manslaughter.
You don't need Cedega to run UT2004, 'tis as easy as:
sudo sh linuxinstaller.sh
Then by using wine or unzipping the bonuspacks into your /usr/local/games/ut2004/ directory.
If the resolution is fixed at some crappy setting (say 800x600), change the x and the y resolution in ~/.ut2004/ut2004.ini (or was it user.ini?)
The ECEbonus pack was a little tricky to install, had to use 7zip in wine to do that
There is a UT2004 installation thread here somewhere in the forums. I'm just too lazy to look it up for you at the moment.
Now to hack out that annoying nVidia "the way it's meant to be played" intro at the start...

There's a .tar.bz2 of megapack. http://www.3dgamers.com/dlselect/games/unrealtourn2k4/Missions/ut2004megapack-linux.tar.bz2.html
Then unpack it (right click can do it)
cd /into/the/unpack/folder
sudo cp -r * /usr/local/games/ut2004

UT2k4 is so far ahead of all the previous versions that it will blow your mind...
Incorporating multiple great game formats that will keep you going for years in single player mode, & then to top it off, there is excellent software built in to find game servers for battling it out online in whatever of the multiple formats the game can be played that takes your fancy at the time...
Unreal!:KS
[Edit:] I almost forgot, it installs natively & plays superbly for most. I hope you have a reasonable 3D graphics card?

I just hope UT2007 when it comes out will support linux too (I think it probably would). ... Perhaps more importantly, I hope it will run on my system!

The original one, I played quite a lot with it during the uni despite the fact we only had Q3 compatitions.
I can still recall my sister shouting with me after she lost.

I vote for UT2007. I have more fun watching the video trailer than playing any prevous UT game!
Seriously though, UT2004 was a huge improvement especially in including UT2003 with it (more or less).

UT2004. It has all the great graphics and gameplay of UT2003 + vehicles. Call me sick, but I love running players over with the manta. The anouncer cracks me up too...'Road Kill!!' 'Vehicular Manslaughter!!' 'PANCAKE!!' I love it.
Looking forward to UT2007

HAHA! HA! AHAH! HAHAHA!
Errr, umm, I have an ATI Xpress 1100. Which is based on the Radeon X300, but with broken OpenGL support. (see here (http://fixthe200m.wordpress.com/)) So all of my gaming is happening in Windows with Direct3D for now... and likely will be until Satan takes up ice hockey and ATI decides to fix this little known problem.
But yeah, other than that, I have a decent card. The UT2004 demo runs perfectly in Direct3D, so I took everybody's advice and picked up the full DVD version (with megapack) for $9.99. I'm about to install it and continue with the addiction that is "bombing run". That demo was like a crack dealer on a playground.
By the way. Don't ever buy anything from ATI.

Lets not forget all the mods you can get for ut2004. Red orchestra, alien sward, deathball, jailbreak... and the best & most original one: Air buccaneers!!
Besides, i think ut2k4 has original ut mutator, so if you're into original ut you can still enjoy it in 2k4.
UT2004 !!!

Everybody likes onslaught until they try VCTF ;) I have a nice server in Europe if you wanna give it a shot

You're totally right. My little brother has 2003 and I can't think of a thing he's showed me that 2004 doesn't have. Now the question is, can you play 2003 and 2004 together (minus vehicles), or am I going to have to send him to the store for another copy?

I have been playing ut since around 2000 - 2001, and am hooked. I have had 2k3, unreal2, and 2k4, but none of them comes close to the wicked adrenaline rush of the original. Modding and mapping is easier for a troglodyte such as myself, too. :)
Did someone say Vehicles? My clanmate, {BL}Henryhouse created something in 2003 called the Hoverbat which was fun enough in offline play, but he didn't know much about replication, so it didn't network well at all. Then he just disappeared for a few years, and popped back up this summer at the old atari forums. I was inspired by not only the hoverbat, but by weapons modding, also, so when Henry popped back up, I immediately grabbed him and asked him to come join us at the BL. I am a server admin, so he has a great place (along with Team Idren Clan's Al, who is a great friend to us) to test his new stuff. At present, we have a fun mod he made called hellhouse (we call it bat wings) that, while not a vehicle, it is great fun. You jump, press crouch, and bat wings pop out of your player (to see them yourself, go to behindview 1) and you can fly all over the place. Needless to say, this makes CTF-Face a whole new map. (aaaaactually, I made a version of face that has both bases separated from one another. you have to fly from one base to the other).
Henry is working on a vehicle class right now and is close to completion of his first online test mod, a simple airplane with full weapons support. We should be testing it this weekend, so there's no telling if it may end up on our server pretty soon.
His intentions are to create a basic vehicle class that can be modified easily with new models and weapons.
our server, if anyone wants to check out the batwings, is 67.19.84.40 this is unreal tournament, not 2k4. (the weapons, Zark Arms, is still in beta. It is a weapons package I am working on to give all ut weapons a Zark feel)
We are a Zark sniper rifle clan, so don't freak when you go in and have a rapid fire sniper rifle. (it will hit anything you can see, btw, and is dead on accurate) We are a run and gun clan, but enjoy a snipe as well as the next insane asylum resident.
What's next? We intend to work on vehicle ctf, UT-Onslaught, and various other game types to bring the "new" stuff to the best version of UT ever made.
Hope to see some of you UT folks in the server sometime. Best time to catch any of us is on Wed or Sun nights sometime after 9 pm eastern time US.
Peace love and fragginess,

Incompatible. Wait before you go, because there is supposed to be a release this fall of Unreal Anthology for about 29 bucks (us) that has unreal, UT, and 2k4 in it.
You might want to google to see if there's an actual date on the release.

Yeah, the mods really make UT2004: when you get bored, there is always FRAG.OPs, Air Buccaneers, Killing Floor, TO: Crossfire...

I played the original UT..very good..
I played the demo of UT 2004...hooked..fav demo of all time. Onslaught rocks. Assualt rocks. Death match pretty much the same..but it was always good. CTF - well this is UT!!
UT 2004 must have been the best native linux game..it doesn't give me probs in the way quake 4 did...sound probs and the like.

UT2K4 became a staple at the last few small LAN parties my friend hosted. Due to the modest system requirements it was still able to run on even the oldest machine that our buddies have. At the same time, the sheer number of game types and mods available made it a solid day of gaming.
Air Buccaneers and Unwheel were quite fun.

I just watched some UT2007 videos at youtube. The tripods look freaking awesome! Otherwise though, I don't see much that I'll be missing when they release the system requirements and I find out that my computer won't run it. :)
