Heya,

I just registered a domain (www.ubuntusociety.org) to act as a network for people who believe in the Ubuntu philosophy. However, I know very little about web programming... We need a forum, mail, some sort of thing to create user accounts...and probably lots of other stuff I haven't thought of. So if you feel like helping out, reply here or send me a PM.

SMF? Doesn't say anything to me. But if it is somewhat customizeable, then great. :)
I can PM you the stuff you need to gain access if you want to try it out on the site. =)

BTW, php and mysql is available, not newest versions though as it is a hosted server and I haven't got full control of stuff. Oh, and space is only 1GB.

SMF = Simple Machines Forum

It is very customizable as far as I'm concerned, and one of my favorite forums systems. :)

Good luck! You'll prolly see me hopping about there once it's up. :)

Sounds good. SMF for forums it is then.

I have also had a suggestion to use Google Apps (https://www.google.com/a/) for some services. Do you think this is a good solution? Or are there better ways?

In a couple of months I will be able to provide a server with a fixed IP and 10Mbit transfer rate. This should be enough I think. That way it is possible to make the entire site powered by Ubuntu. Also makes it possible for a lot more power to administration I think.

So when you guys are working, try to make things easy to migrate to a different server... :cool:

Saphil (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=52700) installed Joomla! content management system. No content added yet, but it is possible to use Squirrelmail to access e-mail accounts. Looks nice enough, just needs a lot of customization.

Since this seems to include both forums, blog, news, e-mail and there are lots of components that may be added, maybe the best solution? Suggestions welcome.

You can check it out at http://www.ubuntusociety.org/us_dev/ if you are interested, but right now I think the only thing that actually works as planned is using e-mail (squirrelmail).

Thanks Saphil (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=52700). :)

They don't? Hmm... Do you know of anything better? Joomla seems very nice, so I think it is a good thing to build on that platform. Do you have any experience with Joomla?

A bit but not much. I had a discussion in my class the other week (Certificate 4 Web Design & Administration) about CMS's, and most peopled liked joomla but a few people had issues with joomla & smf intergration but just try it out and see if it works for you (Which it should).
I am testing out a whole range of free/opensource CMS's at the moment on my site (http://josh.bur.st), seeing which one i like the most. So far I haven't really made a decision. ;).

Goodluck,
