As far as I know Bf2142 is based on Battlefield2 engine. And I don't remember an EA game working on linux. And considering their support 'efforts', I don't want to see one.

I'll be buying Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. Linux client was confirmed by ID and Splash Damage guys. Even more, ID Software will continue to work with OpenGL - even if their games work with both OpenGL and DirectX, their developer tools are OpenGL based.

If BF1942 came to linux I would most definately buy it. However, the Battlefield series is DirectX based so I highly doubt it.

I hate EA games with a passion. I bought BF2 back when I had WinXP, and the box said it will work with Nvidia 6600GT. I assumed this ment the AGP vwersion as well as the PCI-E. Well, after two weeks of calling tech support, I found out that my graphics card was incompatible with the game. I tried my other graphics card, it still crashed.

So, I know this is a older thread, and I'm probably bringing up long answered questions, but I bought BF 2142 not a month before I made the switch to ubuntu, I noticed mention of the BF series being DirectX based which kinda made my heart sink, cause I just dropped $50 on the game, don't want to let it go to waste, and I really don't feel like making a partition for windows just for this game. So if anyone could give me a bit of advice on whether or not it'd be possible for me to run 2142 on Ubuntu Dapper, that'd be great.

There are linux servers for Battlefield but not the actual game.

So no hope of actually putting my money to use?

:( Well damnit, that game has such promise too, guess it's time for a partition >_<

You could try it in Cedega since it's very close to the same engine as BF2...

Apologies, I'm somewhat new to Ubuntu, can you explain to me waht Cadega is?

http://www.transgaming.com

It's for running windows games in Linux. It's hit or miss with newer stuff, but sometimes you get lucky.

Cedega is an implementation of WINE put out by Transgaming that is specifically tasked with supporting games.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. BF2, which uses the same engine as BF2142 is not officially supported (maybe that has changed) because of Punkbuster update issues. If you update manually, BF2 runs, and runs well.

Damnit >_< I'm on my school network right now, can't access that, I'll check it out when I get home. Would that be the only way to run it? I don't guess WINE would be an option, huh?

Not sure. I don't think anyone has had success running BF2 on WINE proper.

Yeah, I didn't think so.

So Cadega would be my best bet, updating manually to avoid punkbuster issues?

What kind performance hit am I lookin at, if any?

My advice would be getting a windows partition. Cedega needs a subscription fee.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but to set up the partition, I would need to designate a size for the partition within ubuntu, then go through windows install and install to that partition, correct?

If so, can you give me the command line needed to set up a 15gb partition on hda1?

First off, I would suggest getting a new harddrive. XP is very very picky about which partition it can install on. If you have two harddrives already, use 1 for Linux and 1 for Windows, makes things easier.

Eh, I plan on getting a new one soon, but as of now my current secondary hard drive is purely for media, I have over 200gb of Music and Movies on it that I'm not about to risk to install windows, but a new hard drive is in the works. Thanks for all the help guys, I'll check out newegg when I get home :D. As for now, my class is over and they're kicking me out, so I'll see you all in a bit.

Lord Ill is right, you need to subscribe to Cedega to get it....$15 up front, then $5 per month after the first 3 months.

The punkbuster crew has a manual update application for linux that makes the whole process easy.

Performance-wise, I got better framerates, less latency, although I lost ingame voip, with BF2. I never really investigated the Voip thing, but I'm sure it could be fixed.

ever notice how forum threads end up being 3-15 pages without any real help?

yeah, you can install bf2142 in linux using cedega, 5.2.7 or higher, specifically.

that doesn't mean it will actually run.

mine installed fine but when i run it it keeps telling me to put the dvd back in the drive.

problem: the dvd IS in the drive.

stupid crap.
