Hi,
I have some footage that I would like to convert from avi to mpg format. Can this be done under Ubuntu?

I use Avidemux for this - you can find it on the repos with synaptic.
Load the avi and from the 'Video' menu select encoder. Choose the video format you want and then save the video in its new format. There's other options there you might want to look at.
