I'm posting this here because I think it's pretty much art-related... but let me know if I should put this somewhere else.
I'm a comic artist and illustrator and I have this little idea I'd really like to put into practice, it's called Comic Development Kit and it's basically about combining the idea of open source software and comic making.
I'm posting this here because I'd need some help on the matter... but more about that later, first I'm going to explain a bit what this is all about.
I imagine it should work something like this: there is a client software you download from the website that is something like inkscape, a vector based software that has two main modes: comic creation and object editor.
in comic creation you have a page where you can put panels and assemble your comic strip using pre-made parts (heads, bodies, objects, backgrounds, balloons and stuff). The objects can be dragged on the page from a kind of gallery (the objects should be stored on a central server, not locally).
in the object editor you can create a new object (which will be saved on the above mentioned central server) or edit an already existing one (in this case the oject will be saved on the server with a higher revision number).
once you have made your comic you can save it, this stores it on the server. optionally you can save it locally export it in some common format or print it.
The software should be available at least for linux, windows and osx.
for the whole process no proprietary software or format should be used (I was thinking about svg as default format).
so as you see the whole thing is pretty much about collaborative comic creation, about refining objects and enlarging the available object pool (wiki style).
other ideas could be the possibility of making "creation packs", packs that contain a fair number of characters and objects for a certain genre. Somebody could make a pack so others could make stories with it.
Now... I'm not a developer... and I don't have a lot of experience on how things work in the oss world, that's why I'm looking for help here. Basically right now I'd like to find out about the following things:
is it feasable, generally speaking... or will it take ages to put something like this in to practice?
could it be possible to use the sourcecode of a vector drawing app like inkscape to develop the client for this?
or should I try to do this with a webbased app (java applet?)
how are things usually working on systems like sourceforge? how are things organized?
is there anybody interested in helping me out on the coding side for this?
would you use it?
do you like the idea?
any help on this is really appreciated!:D
