My idea is to make promotional animations with it (using Moho or maybe Blender).
If you have a suggest.....
EDIT: change color of his head, same as his belly.
EDIT2: next step, I'm studying his way to move... to be continue ..
EDIT3: not sure for the Breezy Logo, but i think colors are good (picked in Ubuntu palette)

I hereby recommend the release be called Roger Rabbit.
[For the future benefit of History Researchers, college students doing papers to History Researchers, and History Lovers. There was in this place a gigantic picture of a Rabbit, arms wide, grin on face, scary bugger really. Unfortunatelly, this may as well have breached internet etiquette #32 [as divulged in Johnson&Johnson, circa 1989 Chapter 3] Is it my fault? Or is it the fault of the hungry, thirsting, readers of ubuntuforums.org gawing and salivating at this beautiful example of the Leporidae species? You take the vote. Hi CaptainCavern, I really enjoy your mascot a lot.
I think that basically, Breezy can do anything : it's Ubuntu's mascot, don't forget it !
I would really love to see your mascot in the following situation :
something like getting lots of wind in the face, making his ears go backwards, and the same surprised face as you already perfectly managed.
"In the wind", that's what I imagine when I hear Breezy.
It would also be cool if your Breezy would have a can of Ubuntu-soda or something like this in his left hand ;)

lol and then Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck after that I suppose?
I don't get why there is this whole "name a release after an animal" thing but never mind, the image is very good and I'd like to see it used.
I think each release should have an animal characature :)

CaptainCavern, I like the mascot you made. If Breezy has a mascot, I vote for yours. Why don't you show it on Ubuntu's developing mailing list (or other, if more apropriate), and bring them any more ideas you may have?
And I agree, it would be cool for each release to have its mascot! Then, the mascot could appear on the CD Back-Cover that Ubuntu ships:
It would be very interesting to look at,
as well as captivating to the "casual" computer user,
and would make for a pretty CD collection after a few releases.

Boy, I laughed my head off my when I saw your mascott ! :o)))
It is just perfect, I already love it to bits ! :o)
I have to confess, I have always hated 99% of the official Ubuntu artwork so far, be it Warty or Hoary. But your drawing looks just beautiful. It still uses this "chocolate/african" colors, but actually makes the best out of them, looks just superb.
I truly hope that Ubuntu will use your mascott as a base to design its entire artwork, from end to end : pressed CD's, graphical installer, GRUB image, kernel bootsplash, GDM, Gnome splah, desktop background, website top banner...
And as you said, since its an animal, we can put it in different situations, instead of just using the same pic everywhere in the system.
And if really you can make animations, how marvelous it would be to have one, in the kernel bootsplash, while the system is booting/loading !!! :o)
FOr exmaple Breezy could be "talking", you could put a text bubble (sand coloured), in which you could write some stuff, to reflect the state of the booting process, like "What the hell is that hard driv ehe plugged, can't recall seeing it last time !" as Hotplug is scanning for H/W. Or just random chit-chat, like "Hey dude, please turn the system off properly today, last time I spent bloody hours running fsck, I have better things to do, please think of me for a change !!! " :o)))
I sincerely hope that your work will find its way into Breezy, if just for national pride...being a fellow Frog ! ;o)

Just a suggestion, considering the tux logo;
Can we make the mascot more contented, maybe in a slightly resting position.
That symbolize ubuntu users who are contented with ubuntu and can rest while using ubuntu.

Hmmm yes, you are probably right.... he has no language...so can't speak :o(
But you are also right, I think we can make the Breezy express things without actually talking. We can use "sounds", we can put it in various positions, situations, with various stares, attitudes etc. A bit like a cartoon really !! :o)
I am sure we can come up with a set of varied Breezy "cartoons" in time for the Breezy release, you seem plenty talented enough to accomplish that, and we will try and give you ideas to work on... :o)))

Very strange indeed. On my Computer Inkscape (version 0.40, 4 April 2005) loads the logo (and any other SVG-File I tested so far) perfectly. Maybe you're working with an other version?
Have you tried to extract the logo from another SVG-file, created by Inkscape? e.g. this one here (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=914) (100% Inkscape, except for the Ubuntu-logo).

Afterwards, I'm going to add hair and fur with dynamic animation.
This animation work will help me to make design's breezy evolved even better (no fondamentals changes), but I'm going to respect the first idea.

This may be a stupid question, and obvious to everyone else. I was wondering what programs you used for this animation. Are they all linux programs? I am trying to find a linux alternative to Macromedia Flash. (I would love to run Flash itself in linux, but I haven't heard good things about doing it that way.)
How awefully unobservant I am. I have just noticed that it is spelled out underneath. Sorry. O:)

Hi,
A preview of final design of Breezy. NOT FINISHED ;) Many, many mistakes because this scene was design directly in moho (I have met some difficulties, but now it's cool) : the aim is to detect how many points and curve I need for a optimal breezy for animation. Smaller tail (design not fixed yet) to reduce confusion with a squirrel. I must find a good ratio between good graph with interpolation animation technic for shoulder, ecetara, ecetara ](*,).
In preparation: Wallpaper,GDM theme and CD cover

Was the Breezy Mascot competition winner announced?I liked this character the best. Simple, recogniseable, distinctive, flexible, customisable, fun and the artist has loads of imagination.
Even if all you had was the head you would still recognise it. I think that this little guy should be the Ubuntu Mascot, not just for the next release. I could imagine his little face on CD's, t-shirts, badges, tie pins, lunch boxes, school bags etc
He could be put in all sorts of poses and it would not detract from the original like the variations of TUX.

What a job my friend !!
Everyone who I had shown this artwork were very very enthusiast, and they are now so interested in UBUNTU !
That's the Point: This artwork makes UBUNTU people !! (In addition with the powerfull UBUNTU system that is really the best I have ever seen !)

I agree to that. The CD stickers are Hilarious. The logo should still be the same, but this badger could tempt more people to ubuntu. Although, what would people think when the next release with another name comes, and ubuntu has a badger as a mascot.
Just waiting for a wallpaper. (Please?) (I'd prefer the sky series because I'm running on kubuntu, which is blue... The badger is in perfect colours though...) You have it vectorized, right? Why not make a SVG wallpaper? (KDE supports SVG wallpapers (I don't know about Gnome), and it's a lot easier to make it in the different resolutions that people want. I'm not demanding anything, but it would be nice with a blueish Breezy wallpaper...
CaptainCavern

Dont worry Firetech, all are vectorized ;)
Tomorrow, I will post my work documents (SVG files). I have to make its cleaner (rename layer, group some parts) and add some modifications. There will be the CD cover added too.
At the moment WIPs are:
- wallpapers
- new splashs (Breezy's playing with a Ubuntu/Xmame arcade cabinet....lol)
- somes story-boards for promotional animations
- crossover splash with the Hoary Hedgehog mascot (I drawn it too)
- some test on Grumpy mascot ;)

Although, what would people think when the next release with another name comes, and ubuntu has a badger as a mascot.
What does the name have to do with the mascot?
Theres this little pengiun and it is instantly recognisable on my business shirt by the guy at the newsagency, a pharmacist, a service station attentdant, a teacher at my kids school and many other people in the most unlikely places. It has happened so often that it does not surprise me any more. Take a guess which OS they ask me about?
I really don't think people would care. The circle thingy can be the "serious" logo, Breezy can be the fun mascot. If you are targeting businesses then don't have Breezy about, he could put them off. But my guess is that Breezy would attract alot more users to Ubuntu than without him.
Besides that it will give the distro a bit of history, imagine in 5 years time when most people using Linux are running Ubuntu and you see a FAQ of why it uses a Badger as it's mascot. You can think to yourself "Hey I was there when that happened".

No time for preparing all SVG work documents (soon I do it ;) but I show you this WIP.
This cover is based on the Warty's one. But it could be change... of course.
I'm not sure for the brown background because of white text: indeed I dont know if readability of the text survive to the print process. I have to interrogate a printer.
Done:
- add shading on Breezy but it depends on the budget of canonical :more colors more expensive, except if the cover will be printed with CMYK process but direct tones give a better result.
- change install CD's color in function of the final color of background.(maybe yellow)
- fix tail position (put on the floor)
- draw a toon chipset for Intel x86, AMD64 and PPC
- fix ubuntu logo size behind CD: it must be totaly masked by the CD.
- rotate Breezy on CDs for mask him when the CD is put away.
Todo:
- add (maybe) a computer nearby Breezy for a visual understanding of the product.
- complete the pantone reference
- search good fonts (where is the Ubuntu's font ?).
If you have a suggestion for the baseline of Breezy logo : "Operating system for all", or something else, please tell me.
Note: I keep the copyright to protect the mascot until competion results because I dont know how Ubuntu/Canonical think to protect it or what licence under they want to place it. But dont worried about that.
EDIT : I add a less brownish version for fun ;) Sorry for size file  , I clean the forum later...I promise :)

- search good fonts (where is the Ubuntu's font ?).
One was made based on the Ubuntu logo but she was not willing to release it. She wanted approval to release from Conical first. There were arguments about if she could legally release it without their approval or not.
In the end what it came down to was that no matter what anyone said or if it was legal or not, whether she needed their approval or not, she was not going to release it without their go ahead.
If you have a suggestion for the baseline of Breezy logo : "Operating system for all", or something else, please tell me.
I thought the Ubuntu tagline was "Linux for Humans Beings", why not use that?
Note: I keep the copyright to protect the mascot until competion results because I dont know how Ubuntu/Canonical think to protect it or what licence under they want to place it. But dont worried about that.
You are awesome, I laughed at the latest CD slip, the expression on Breezy's face is a crack up.
That Breezy is so well designed, it only takes a small change in the eyes, ears and the mouth line and his expressions changes dramaticlly. Are you a professional artist? Any links to your other work? Surely this mascot cannot be a one off, there is too much talent there.

Yes, Hazza96, I'm a professional artist. I have my own business for 1 years (and 5 years of experience). But I use to work on 3D architectural design (with Blender). I'd never worked on character design before.
When I saw there was a competition for Ubuntu I decided to work on because I use GNU/Linux and free software for 6 years:
My mind is totaly in agree with the free software spirit. For my business, I need robust softwares.
So I WANT to contribute to this huge human project. I WANT to introduce more fun in it to attract more people and to show us that free software is rather mature for doing anything.
I think Ubuntu is the turning point for flooding the world of free software in order to reach the main goal of free software: software for human beings.
As you can see, I am motivated :D :P
EDIT: Ok for your gallery Hazza96, my web site is very slow sometime and at this time a friend rewrite it. So I want it. Thank you very much

move the name around? (or just say, somewhere, "Breezy Badger Edition"

With the cd cover, I should point out, the copyright of the Ubuntu logo prohibits using it at different angles, so you should have one "head" pointing directly to the left, where on the design you have one either pointing directly down or directly up.
But I really do like it ;)

Yes, I think this idea is very pleasant, and is really close of the feelings we have when we install this Ubuntu distro.
Hey Captain, why don't you make a style of word game between Human Beings and Breezy badger ? In sense where a badger may ask itself why he is HERE !!? On Ubuntu CD !
No ? How does he come here ?
To ending, I am amazed too with your work, for a first mascot, the result is very professional ! Ready to print and sell ! WONDERFULL !!
Great job, keep on !

No. I don't like it. We're a Linux distribution, not a giant badger mascot. Ubuntu doesn't need a mascot.
I think that it does, Ubuntu has got a logo but I think that it needs to have a mascot. Linux itself has Tux as it's logo/mascot. That hasn't turned away any big businesses now has it? Businesses turn a blind eye or use a self imposed amnesia but it certainly attracts more ordinary users that it would have otherwise.
The problem with the design of Tux is that if he is altered too much he doesn't look like Tux. Can you imagine a Tux that is angry? Sure you could do it but it just doesn't seem part of his personality. I have seen a picture of Tux holding a Doom II weapon and yes it did look completely stupid with him still having the same expression on his face.
This Breezy Badger character that CaptainCavern has designed is awesome. It has so much potential and range, I can imagine the little guy in almost every situation, scared, awed, cheeky, angry, proud, laughing, running, sitting, jumping, parachuting (http://ubuntu.tux.com.au/gallery/breezy/badger2_1_4_wc), peeking out from behind the Ubuntu logo, the possibility's are endless.

Do you see any Enterprise without logo or mascot ?
Personnaly, I don't see ...
I thing the use of a mascot is to universalize the idea, concept or product.
I demonstrate it works in a precedent post, because when I show the CaptainCavern Artwork around, people becomes interested in the product.
I think you are a bit closed saying Ubuntu doesn't need mascot or any representative logo :! Of course Ubuntu needs one, they were making a art competition, weren't they ??
Perhap's the fact that the mascot is too huge may you think that Ubuntu is a mascot ? But I don't think so ...
To end:
Ubuntu is a linux distribution, WE ARE people who use it !
Ubuntu is an operating system debian based, only represented by a (for my part: wonderfull) mascot, that's all !
I think the idea of an ubuntu mascot is good, and CaptainCavern work, the ONE (this is the only complete and cute artwork I have seen on this forum) !

This character was produced to be a mascot for the Breezy Badger development, but I think it is so good that it should be the mascot of the distro not just one development cycle.
Maybe that's why there has been no anouncement of the mascot competition, they could be deciding if they want this as their official mascot.

Well, I for one was quite turned off by the penguin at first.
I think that if Ubuntu gets a mascot for the whole distribution, not just one build, it needs to be professional-- and i don't mean made by a professional, I mean it needs to LOOK professional. Konqui (the KDE dragon) doesn't, Tux doesn't really. People are more attracted to abstract logos that are compelling and interesting. That should also be taken into account

I don't HAVE them, but I have read them.
It's been a while, but someone posted some here a few months ago. I'll try to find them but I'm not sure what to even search for :)
But when I said I was quite turned off by Tux at first, the key words are "at first." :) I do like him now, but for major adoption by users and businesses, I don't think the response to an animal in th elogo would be great-- unless there's something interesting and fresh being done with it, and that's what leads me to the abstract. Just an animal for the official logo or mascot (not just for one version) looks like a kids book or something.
I'm all for a mascot for each release, I'm just not sure how best to handle them.

I like your splash very much! This has given me this idea on how to have the mascot in breezy ubuntu, without alienating those who don't find him funny/cute:
The CD cover would only hint at this mascot. Either by having a small sillouette of him doing something funny, or hidding somewhere, waiting to be installed.
When first booting the future LiveCD/Install CD, breezy badger would give his first, and possibly only if the user so chooses, apearence. He would also appear a bit hidden or cloaker, perhaps his head poping in from the side of the screen, or his silluete from affar. This would also be "breezy badger" the mascot being hinted to users.
Users who don't like or don't care for animated caracters(is there a spellcheck for firefox?), could just ignore him, and go on using ubuntu, and never see him again.
Users who became interested and curious about this little guy, could try and search for him a bit more inside ubuntu.
And they would find him as a theme in System->Preference->Themes, with a name such as "Breezy Badger" and a description like "Ah, you found me! Nice to meet you, my name is breezy badger and I can brighten up your ubuntu experience!". This of course should be something which follows his persona.
This theme would "install" breezy into various places in gnome (and kde if kubuntu) like in your gnome splash, and the desktop, etc.

I like the splash screen!
And jobezone-- that's what I'm talking about! That would rock hard, the idea of the mascot being an easter egg. But have it harder to find than just the theme dialog. It'll be a reward for hard work!
Now, it would be nice if there were a way to make it random, so that it's not just a matter of going on to the forums and finding the instructions on how to find it. But that would be next to impossible.

How do I use this as the splash image? When you say splash image is that displayed while it is booting or the one that is displayed at the login screen?
I would like to have both, the splash screen would have him looking excited and the second would be him happy to see you.
caracters(is there a spellcheck for firefox?),

Well, I think that if it was made harder to find, it would keep the main target of the mascot away of the mascot, that is, new users to ubuntu, linux and computers in general :)
I think the theme preferences would be an easy way to enable the mascot's customizations (Just a theme, with it's background, splash screen, perhaps even icons?), and serve as a good reward for those curious and exploring novice users (skills they should keep in ubuntu).

I love the "badger in the sky with diamonds" image. Too bad we can't have him jumping out of a burning plane with a Microsoft logo on the side. hehe. maybe some variation of "time to make the jump to (ubuntu) linux!" for a slogan?
also, with the fan idea, perhaps he could be holding an ubuntu flag? (hence the need for the fan!)
for curiosity's sake, are you up for sharing SVG's for either plain old backgrounds or to more easily make visual suggestions? i'm only a lowly graphic designer (as opposed to an illustrator), but it might be a little easier on you if some of us could *try* to implement some of the suggestions in this thread. just a thought.

Because paper is multiplateform, wireless, no powered, it has no bugs, no complex interface.... ;)
Draw, put your ideas on paper and organize your project in function of production type (paint,still,animation,vector,3D...).
Now, you can use your computer : scanning, colorization, vectorization, modeling, ect.
Your imagination and experience do the rest.
Tips: don't waste time to search tutorials for copying aqua-drop-shadow-steal-metal-brushed-blabla-X_version4562354687451.2.
These tutorials are usefull but limit imagination and graphical innovations.
Free your imagination.
but it might be a little easier on you if some of us could *try* to implement some of the suggestions in this thread. just a thought.
Ok. My proposition :
if someone want to suggest idea (in order to discuss with art community), post a scanned draw/schema/storyboard .... simple and effective ;)
Imagine .... art forum full of draw, few words (just essential), no trolls, no intrusive interface. This will create good imagination emulation, for sure.
...that gives me an idea ...
Bye.

Following the instructions in this thread:
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=43023
I grabbed this image:
http://ubuntu.tux.com.au/gallery/breezy/badger1_2_wc
And turned it into a grub splash screen and you can find it here:
http://tux.com.au/files/breezy_splash.xpm.gz
Are there any other Breezy images you would like converted to a grub splash screen?

I would love to see it as a splashy theme. Check out splashy on these forums.

Ahh... that is a splashy theme... if you followed the links you would see that the first one is instructions for creating a splashy theme. grub splash == splashy
Next on my list is a GDM theme.

Hello,
Recently, I was working on a mascot for next Ubuntu.
Really cool!!
got two suggestions can you reduce his slump and make his smile more prominent please :)

CaptainCavern, maybe you can join the ubuntu art mailing list at http://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art and present your mascot to them.

The grin is too big in this one (http://ubuntuforums.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=790).
It should be shortened. Like most snouted creatures, badgers do not have mouths that extend to the end of their snouts. The grin should only go half way down or 2/3 of the way down the badger's snout. Currently it goes all the way down.
