You might consider partitioning your harddisk. To do this, open Disk Utility from the Installer menu when booted from the OS X CD and start creating partitions.
Of course it WILL erase your harddisk, but if you want to try another system in the future, you just have to delete your extra partition. If you still want to have Ubuntu, YellowDog, Debian or whatever installed just allocate 5 GB for it. More then enough if it isn't your main system. You can share the Macintosh partition with linux as well.
I found that even though I keep removing Linux/BSD from my main computer I always come to a point I want to try it again, usually within 3 months when some new stuff is out ;-)

yes, that might be the best solution.
and it is fairly easy nd safe. In disk utilities, make two partitions and write down the size of the one you will want to use for Ubuntu.
once OSX is installed, just pop in the Ubuntu disk and install as usual, but in the preparing disk step, do not choose erase whole disk, but the other option. you'll see a list of partitions, don't worry if it's chinese for you, one will have the same size you wrote down. use that one.
Then, after full istallation, your computer starts up with a litle textmenu, x for OSX, l for Linux etc... If you don't press any key, it will start up in Ubuntu.
