Either my apt/synaptic has problem or there isn't any update?
I don't see them since hoary was released.
Or, the team went for holiday break?
Honestly, the team is deserved for a holiday break.
Good job.

I scanned through the forums this morning and no, I didn't find anything useful as far updates, you're not the only one who has this little update thing going on to, got a few buddies of mine on an IRC network that have Ubuntu and are not getting any updates either.
Could be a break for staff, or just a hold on updates for new security releases.

I'm having the same problem, I suppose its because of the release of hoary and that updates will resume in a few weeks.

After a version of Ubuntu is released, typically there will be no updates, except for security fixes via the USN. If you'd like updates to various desktop packages (i.e. Firefox, Gaim 1.2.x, etc) and Universe version updates, see http://backports.ubuntuforums.org/
Now, I have heard conflicting stories on hoary-updates, which may provide official updates similar to what I provide via Backports.

Okee, the updates are on hold, but isn't there a unstable version, say Breezy?
so that we just have to change our sources.list?

I don't think breezy has started yet. Or, they put it somewhere besides http://archive.ubuntu.com/dists/

Well I changed the name hoary into breezy in the sources.list but indeed it didn't work, so no I think they haven't put it up yet :-(

I added thoose backports, thanks guys.
Anyway, i loved when the Ubuntu devs gave me lots of updates each day. So, what is this breezy thing? Is it the unstable version of hoary? Just as hoary is the unstable version of warthy, so to speak?
If so, will when will it be released? Will there be lots of updates just the way it was in hoary before it was released?
Need info here guys. :)

Right. Breezy is the next release. Of course, if you really like this kind of thing, you should know that Breezy will just track Debian sid (up until they freeze the versions Ubuntu will use and with Ubuntu's own patches). You may want to look into using Debian sid (aka Debian unstable) if you like this kind of thing. Personally, I like the stability of the 6 month releases.

Info on breezy can be found here. http://udu.wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDownUnder/BreezyGoals
You have to wait til it's released for development status to upgrade to it.

Maybe it's because 5.04 is so good that "we don' need no steenkin' updates"...
Seriously, I seem to recall that there was virtually no update activity immediately following the 4.10 release, either. I'd guess it's a combination of (a) the release being so new there are no updates and (b) the devs are taking some well-deserved time off.

Well, it would be a little surprising to see security updates so quickly.

Ok, i am not really interested in installing Debian right now, but i will think about it until next time.
So, does anyone know when Breezy is being released? I dont mean officially released, but released so we can test it.
And another thing, will there be new kernel updates or do i have to compile them for myself in the future?

I imagine that they'll need to sort things out first:
http://udu.wiki.ubuntu.com/FrontPage
Although I wouldn't be too surprised if some stuff popped up before then.

actually, once a stable version is released, it should not need continual updates. that would be a very bad sign (fedora had some 64 updates on the day they released the "stable" fedoracore 3. that is a no no!) for any distro. and almost everything works as expected. so... first of all, the devel-team deserves a small vacation. second, it will need some time to evaluate all bug-messages that might arise in the next weeks. and it is worth to wait with further update-procedures until new debian sid i released. this will make work much easier...
and just an idea... maybe some of them are working on debian stable right now? ;)

well, call me a n00b but i like the idea of continous updates for an operating system (Windows Update). I am very dissappointed that there will not be regular updates. I've had the backports repositories enabled for a week now and I've only seen 1 update since. I had grown acustom to the updates that came with the hoary beta's, seemed like they update the repositories once every few hours. I was excited to see what was being updated.

I just installed Hoary last night and this morning there was an update related to one of the language packages for Firefox. Unfortunately I don't remember the exact package. More generally, although I've only spent a tiny bit of time with Ubuntu (this is my first debian-based system, I've previously used RedHat and Fedora), my first impressions of Synaptic and apt-get are wonderful after installing 3 or 4 packages last night and doing the update this morning. I've tended to dist-hop in the past, usually due to frustrations rpm-based systems, but I think that'll change based on my initial impressions of Ubuntu and its community.

Right, that was chrome edit local english install, probably the only install you will probably see in a few days, if not longer based on new events we're getting already.

Well, there will be regular updates. Security updates, for one thing, if you have hoary-security in your sources.list. This is all that Windows Update gives you, isn't it?
If you have hoary-updates, you also get various language updates, and artwork. Not sure what else is supposed to go in there.
The continuous updates you got before hoary was released was because the packages being used were in flux. Now that it's released you should only expect 'important' things to change. That's the whole point of a release.

Not sure if anyone else got this, but 2.6.11-1-02 just came out, I tested it out and is bugged, but loads the desktop fully but freezes hard.
Wanted to see if anyone tested this out and experienced the samething.

Windows Updates are made to fix critical security flaws with a poorly written/checked OS. Ubuntu/Linux is much more secure than that.
Continuous security updates ARE provided (We are on USN 110, the 110'th security update for a stable Ubuntu release).
Backports does get new updates -- but since Hoary was released so recently, there's really not much to do. I have a few minor packages (Webmin, Wesnoth, Java 1.4) in internal build/test phases right now, but nothing too urgent to release. What do you want to see updated? If you just want dummy updates to make you feel better, I'm sure I can arrange for that ;)
Distros that offer continuous update cycles (like Gentoo) are marred with frequent breakages. One day, KDE works. Apply an "update", and the system refuses to boot. If you like that kind of "fun", switch your system to the Breezy development branch that just recently opened.

I just learned that the only we can have regular updates is by jumping into the next development release, Breezy.
You will get updates, lots of it. Just change your sources.list hoary -> breezy.
Being development means that you are now on unstable packages.

That's one way of getting newer updates. However, stuff has been known to break during the Hoary development cycle (happened 2 times, at least!)
Really annoying if you need to use the computer and find out that X locks up the system ;)

Generally, the 6-month release cycle is more than enough to keep things updated to my liking for general use (with stuff I really want in Backports), but I'm currently using the Breezy repositories as a fun little experiment. That being said, I'm going in with the assumption that its going to break.

All I have to say is WOW! this list of updates is incredible by Breezy :) hopefully the 2.10.1 gnome will do some good ;)
/#Edit > $ I knew there would be some problems in the java, but probably uninstalling the older packages might work, not sure? O.o well I did get the following error when doing an update after the whole repo list installed.
The following packages have been kept back:
libgtk2-java:
Depends: libgnome-java but it is not installable
libgtk2-jni:
Depends: libgtk-jni but it is not installable
libjava-gnome-doc:
Depends: libgtk-java but it is not installable
Depends: libgnome-java but it is not installable
Depends: libgconf-java but it is not installable
Depends: libglade-java but it is not installable

So people can use Breezy? I tought it wasnt here yet. :) Are many of you using it?
As usual, is it just to change to "breezy instead of "hoary" in my reps?
One more thing, thoose backports reps you linked to, do i have to remove thoose or can they stay? If they have to be removed, do i have to remove the packages that was updated with the backport reps?

Personally, I will join with the Ubuntu devs in enjoying a brief timespan when fixing/patching/updating isn't required. Lemme use my non-busted 5.04 system for awhile...I'm sure I'll get the "I wonder what's coming up next" jones before too long <g>.
