What interests you personally? Music, games, IM, whatever? Search sf.net for similar projects and contribute to those.

a dock that you don't need a compositor and xgl to use. There are no good mac osx like docks for us gnome usres to use, thats easy to get going and make it easy to add launcher and such. And maybe be creative and don't make it look lie the typical dock.

Guys thanks for your warm replies. i think i should make an effort towards building a messenger. i know not a thing about messenger programming but i have to waste a life anyway and this is a much noble way of doing it:D

But if you join an existing project you will have an easier start, better chances of finishing and better chances of contributing.

building a messenger is a very big task, I think it would be better (for you and for the comunity also :)) if you start by contributing to a already existing project.

why not email gaim and ask to help.
or atleast review their code to get a magnitude of such a project.
