I have a suspicion I'm the only non-Clearlooks themer still around...
But anyway, for those of you who can't use Clearlooks because of the _crappy_ quality of the checkmarks, I've created a theme using variants of colors off the Ubuntu palette.
I've called it Earth. My apologies if it conflicts with any existing theme. Enjoy.

What engine does this use - smooth?

yeah, it's smooth...can't ya tell? ;-) not to mention it's link's
Nice link! Thx! Looks good.
Does the problem with the black still exist when switching between the smooth and cl engines?
I can't imagine the non perfect checks and options would make it impossible for anyone to use clearlooks but yeah, they need work.

I've switched back and forth between the two engines and haven't noticed anything. Where was this black showing up?

I have trouble using a theme if there is something very prevalent (like checkboxes) that is ugly. The whole point of a theme is to look good, and if there's one thing wrong, I tend to fixate on it. Hence why I am incredibly fickle with what theme I use. I always end up coming back to SmoothGNOME/Glider though. I can't seem to find a theme more usable. Clearlooks (besides the crappy checkboxes) has too many distracting things that pull my eyes away from what I'm doing (like the progress bar, or these blasted animated smilies on the right of the text box... I keep looking at that one smacking its head against the brick wall... ](*,)). I guess I look for boring but usable themes, rather than flashy & pretty, but more distracting themes.
However, Aqua on OS X is incredibly usable and pretty. Go figure, and IMO Industrial was the closest we in the GNOME community came to emulating Aqua.
EDIT: I think about themes too much. :)

somewhere between 46-60 at gnomefilesHi,
I want to congratulate the authors of clearlooks engine. It's a very nice theme.
But the version 0.4 (in my PC) makes the Smooth engine appears very weird.
This happens when I select a clearlooks theme and then I switch to a Smooth theme,
the tabs, buttons, scrollbars an panel turn to black (background and foreground colors) and the borders of these controls seem very "bold", I mean 4 or 5 pixels wide.
This happens too in inverse, when I start the session with a Smooth theme and switch to a clearlooks the last one turns to black. What's going on?
I use FC2 and gtk 2.4.0 but I had it on ubuntu and mandrake in gtk 2.6. It kinda gets wacked out like the svg/pixmap engines do. That's easy to fix though with these. Just tell the svg engine to use the pixmap. Silly, eh?
EDIT: I think about themes too much. You and me both
After my experiences on theming gnome, I gave up on perfection, and I'm a perfectionist  ....pretty depressing really
I like everything...well, everything but industrial, mist...all the plain 2D crap. Aqua on OS X is usable for a desktop but working in the printing industry for the last 2.5 years has shown it to be a distraction. Even my prepress mgr hates it. Gnome has needed a major face lift for years...wait....it's always needed a face lift  I'd 'almost' rather color gtk than use industrial...YUK!

Hey now, some of us *like* flat styles! In fact some of us might even say we *prefer* a flat style.
I really can't stand any widget that looks like it's part of my stereo system in my car... give me the flat please.

in case you haven't noticed, the slider doesn't display correctly in the Volume Control, but I've seen that b4 and think it's probably a per app issue with it and not the theme.

I'm really enjoying it, thx!

these blasted animated smilies on the right of the text box...
Excuse me..?
Also the Bluecurve checkboxes aren't ugly. :) But we should probably use those from Industrial instead, as they seem to have better anti-aliasing.

Oh, now I get what you meant with the smileys. ;) I tend to use the quick reply thingy. I don't think it's fair to compare our progressbar with this kind of distraction. Also you praise Aqua, but Aqua is where we got the idea for it in the first place?! Anyway, in the next release it's a theme option, so purists can make them flat.
And never lose faith in perfection. ;)

the checks are lighter than the option...that's the prob on lighter colors
checks need to be darked a tad
..oh, this is a smooth thread
