Steam minimizing

I just got Steam installed and working but I cant minimize it or X will freeze (excluding the mouse). Is there a way I can fix this?

ok, well i just played (or tried rather) to play a game and the steam window stays on top of the game so I cant play it, is there a way to fix this?

You need to close the window immediately after you've started a game.
Or you can launch Steam with the -applaunch option, which brings you directly into the game.
