Hi,
I would like to know which is the best chess interface (needs to include player vs computer, player vs player (over IP), wide range of options for chess pieces and boards and a tutorial if possible) for ubuntu.
Any inputs would be highly appreciated.
Thanks,
Nitin.

eboard isn't enough. It doesn't have a chess-engine, so you can't play against the computer with it unless you install gnuchess (a chess engine)
I have eboard (with gnuchess) and xboard with gnuchess and phalanx. And I like the way phalanx plays more than gnuchess...
I was amazed at how difficult it was to get a good chess program for ubuntu! Couldn't find a program that would include everything.. just separate chessboard-programs and chess-engines. (luckily the engines are good)

What is the problem exactly? Of course you are much more likely to find separate modules in linux, because linux's philosophy is modularity. If you want a bloated monolithic thing, use windows and such. It is much more pleasant to be able to mix and match whichever modules you prefer than rely on someone else to do that for you.

Have a look to Jose Chess at jose chess at http://jose-chess.sourceforge.net/
although it might not have all the options you are requesting, it has some others like a very good database. And graphics are OK.

I'd recommend jin (http://www.jinchess.com/) which works well with FICS (http://freechess.org/).
