Is it just me? But I had some problems with my hoary:

1. Can't play DVD
2. Can't play MP3
3. Can't print eventhough the printer has been added

So I uninstall it again since it's not worth it rather than using windows. I've got too much too lose by using ubuntu.

DVD and MP3 are not working out of the box for license issue, however a little look at ubuntuguide.org should do the trick and solve the problem in less than 10 minutes.

I downloaded it this am but had to leave for work so I have not had a chance to install yet. I was impressed with the download speed. It seems that other ditros I have downloaded are always slow for weeks when a new release comes out but this was really quick.

I also tried printing with OpenOffice but the printer did not respond :( And there is no guide in ubuntuguide.org about setting printer. Anyway thanks for telling, perhaps I'll try it again some other time.

You need to go to the printer tool (undernieth "system") and add your printer. Just like in XP.

It has been a day of double joy for me, for my 'new' Thinkpad T21 arrived from eBay today, and I have a fresh Hoary CD to install onto it!

I'm well happy. I've read various guides on the T21 about having to mess with acpi, and fiddling with X configuration to fix the cursors, and.. and.. and..

Installed Hoary. All the hardware works. I have not yet found a single problem. Out of the box? You betcha!

It's been a pretty happy day here, too.

I've been suffering with Windows for a while on my old Dell Inspiron 2650 laptop. I use and love Gentoo on my desktop at home (and a Mac Mini too). But I dreaded trying to configure Gentoo on a laptop. The laptop gets used mostly at work, so I needed a distro that "just works", rather than a project and hobby like Gentoo.

Based on the positive reviews, I figured I'd give Hoary a shot.

Wow. It "just works"! My wireless network works. My external USB burner works. My digital camera works. Speedstep throttling on my P4-M works. All stuff I dreaded trying to configure.

And even though there's been some gripes about mp3 support not working by default, there was nothing to adding it. It's a complete non-issue. Piece of cake.

If anything, it was TOO easy. I feel like I cheated. It's supposed to be more work! I'm supposed to sweat a little... struggle a little!

It's not often the hype is justified, but this time it is. This is a heck of a nice distro. I'd like to give a huge pat on the back to those who worked on it!
