Hi there,
I've been reading Ubuntu 6.06 unofficial guide fore some time to get the feel of using Ubuntu, since i might be using it in the future. I have one magor misunderstanding. It says in 'General Notes' section that 'apt-get' and 'wget' commands require internet connection, however, the very same commands must be used to setup the connection in sections:
How to install Dialup PPP Client (GNOME PPP)
How to install Broadband ADSL/PPPoE Client (RP-PPPoE)
Do you see the problem? The 'apt-get' and 'wget' commands are used to get internet connection, but themselves require it.

apt-get and wget are used to get and install programs from the net. but dialup and dsl clients come with ubuntu (at least i'm using kde and i have those clients).
ps: i checked the general notes and yes it says that. ironic actually :) it's like getting the setup file of rar in .rar format.

you can always run the commands on another computer.
wget -c rarrarrar.deb
will download a file from the net, you can then put it on the usb drive, take it to your other pc, and deb -i rarrarrar.deb
same as apt-get, you can use apt-get and only get the file and not install it...

Yes, Atomkarinca, that was a good comparison, and, cope, lets not complicate the issue, that's complicated enough already (for me at least). Don't think enyone sane would bother to get another computer just to install rar. I've understood that internet connetion was cruxial for Ubuntu, and it didn't make sense it would be required to set up dialup or broadband client. So, as long as no connection is needed in that case, every thing is fine. Perhaps someone with appropriate access rights can make a note about it in the general section to avoid stupid questions.
Thanks for your replies, guys.

Your question isn't stupid at all. It's quite logical, actually. If you have your computer connected to the internet when you install Ubuntu, it should recognize the connection automatically. You should not need to apt-get anything to get your internet running. Should work out of the box.
Ubuntu 6.06 is actually a combine Live/Install CD. So, when you boot in the first time, before even installing, you should be able to play with the OS off the CD, confirm your internet connection is running and a whole bunch of other things. Once you're satisfied, you can install it from the "Install" desktop icon.
Welcome!!

apt-get can also be used to install things from the Ubuntu cdrom, if you use
apt-cdrom add first.

I'd suggest to keep it simply if you're a beginner. Install Synaptic and then you can see a combination of all the available packages, both on the CD and the internet for you to pick and choose between. Don't forget to enable all the respositories available via the Synaptic menu.
