Adding items to Places Menu

Ok, as the title suggests, im having difficulty adding items to the places menu, am i being dumb?

could some one tell me how?

Open any "open dialog", like in gedit. Then browse to any directory and click "add" on the left.

Pin the menu (small icon top left)
Drag items into menu
Un-pin menu
