personally I can't stand covering songs.
I like playing them to an extent, maybe get the style down or just jam along to sound good to the song as it's playing. but I just can't stand learning actual songs.
I improvise to the songs instead, make up my own rhythm and lead to them. it makes it 10x more entertaining and I feel like I'm just getting better and better.
I'm gonna record a video as soon as I get that guitar neck :).
Yes, indeed you are right. I do the same. But what I am talkin about here is the 11 year old guy playin beautifully.
I am talking abt the genre. Songs by Tommy Emmanuel, Oscar Lopez, etc etc are my type. And that was what I was talking about.
Sorry for the misunderstanding.

hey I am upgrading my old Taylor Big Baby to a Taylor 110 or 114
the 110 and 114 are pretty much the same thing as far as materials go and price range. only difference is that the 110 is a dreadnought shape and the 114 is a grand auditorium shape.
I have played the 110 at a guitar center and I really like the sound. the Taylor Big Baby was a dreadnought shape as well but its tone is nowhere near that of the high end models. the 110 however sounds just like all the high end models w/o the big price tag. I don't want to make a decision till I have tried the 114 model I have never played a grand auditorium shape before. before trying it I wanted to get an idea of what the tonal differences are between a dreadnought and a grand auditorium shape. I assume that the grand auditorium is less bass and more treblely sounding, I guess I wont really know till I try it but I just wanted to get some feedback from some fellow guitar players.
I have honestly never played either of these guitars but this may help a little with the tone difference http://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=10902
I have always played dreadnoughts (currently a Martin) and love the way they sound, but like everything else with guitars it comes down to personal preference. I would sit down and play them both and get the one that sounds best to you.

hah it takes forever to ship from north carolina to california.
still waiting on that neck but I know it'll be worth the wait.
there isn't a cheap place to buy guitar electronics is there? I have a fender body that I'm thinking about replacing /everything/ in it. but I can't find anything decent. yet.

Dreadnaughts are good if you play a lot of cowboy chords, OMs are better for fingerstyle.
OMs are also a lot more comfortable to play for long periods of time.
The downside is that there aren't many OM sized guitars at less than high prices that have any bottom end at all.

got that neck yesterday, fits perfectly though there is some space in between it and the pick guard (I don't really care.)
it's so glossy my fingers slide on it. definitely saved me a lot of money paul, this neck looks like it's worth +$120.
here it is, on the body I have :).

The Takamine 12 is a dreadnaught and I can guarantee you it isn't as comfortable to play as the 00 next to it. THere is nearly an inch difference in width and nearly 2 all round.
I must update this photo to include my Ibanez thinline nylon string.

Solid choice. I have a Dean '79 V and it's a great guitar that I got for a pretty nice price ($250 after $200 off).
As for Dave Mustaine, he's a pretty good guitarist but I can't stand his voice :). Also, Marty Friedman is where it's at.

Hi everyone,
I've been playing guitar on and off for the last 7 years now. It slowed down a lot though when I went to university and could not take a guitar with me. Since 2 years i graduated and since a month or 5 I really started playing again but I was no longer happy with my equipment. I had a Squiter starting pack (Squier Statocaster and a 10W amp).
So a few months ago I decided to upgrade my equipment and picked up a Gibson SG Standard, combined with a Marshall MG 30 DFX. The sound really is amazing and blew my head off at first :guitar:.
http://users.skynet.be/fa004073/GibsonSGStandard_small.jpg (http://users.skynet.be/fa004073/GibsonSGStandard.jpg)
Ever since I got it, I started practised a lot again and my skills improved significantly over the last few months. Currently I'm mainly focussing on some Metallica songs from the good old days (Master of puppets, Fade to black, Call of ktulu, ...) and it goes so well I even start giving their solos a try!

Guitar thread, huh? Any room for a Bass player? :)
Any of you guys use Ubuntu to record? I'm thinking about opening a home studio. I used ProTools at my school, but I hate how much it costs. I've recently been tinkering with Ardour. Does any one think it compares? I think the whole aspect of FREE overpowers any feature that Ardour might not have.

I saw him play this at Gigantour 2 years ago. That was an AMAZING show. They know how to tear a place down. The pits for Megadeth were almost better than the pits for Job for a Cowboy.... Almost. :P

Hey fellow guitar players !
I'm not new to Ubuntu, but I am a beginner guitar player. I accidentally bumped into this thread, and I think here is where I'll hang out for awhile. I need advice for recording my practice on the guitar, I have an Applause acoustic-electric and I recently bought a Casio keyboard because it has songs and rythms and beats I can play while I play the guitar. Can you guys tell me what setup you have? can you plug the keyboard into your PC (I have an Acer netbook) and using some music program record your playing? Will only the keyboard get recorded or my guitar too? Do I need to buy a mike? I am really a rank beginner, is Tuxguitar too advanced for beginners?
I thank you in advance for any answers and advice you can share.:guitar:

Just keep at it and you will get faster at the changes. I am helping a friend learn right now and every time we get together to play he is a little faster at the changes. And once you have it you have it (other changes get easier even if they aren't your "normal" changes).

I can certainly attest to learning things slowly and building up. I went way too fast way too soon with many things and now I'm kind of "starting over" with some stuff, keeping the metronome going all the time and building up steadily.
If anyone is interested, I'm about to make this pedalboard soon: link 1 (http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1095263), link2 (http://acapella.harmony-central.com/showthread.php?t=2162433). It's an excellent design and looks like a fun kind to make. My board can barely hold my 4 pedals, I grabbed the Fulltone OCD a few weeks back and am getting a delay (not sure which) and Small Clone soon, plus it's time to get the powerstrip onto the board...

More than 2 changes in the bar can often indicate that the construction of the chords you are meant to play could be made easier with a barre version, or only playing significant notes from the chords without forcing a drastic time consuming hand movement.
Less is more, said Martin Carthy once, when describing his experience of using an electric guitar instead of an acoustic...
Personal experience.. blanked last week playing a new song in concert.. too much diving up and down the neck distracted me from the singing of the words.. have now re arranged the chord shapes I require to avoid excessive movement...need more practice, so I'll report back if that works at next outing :)
Just realised: it is 41 years this week since I started to play the acoustic guitar......

Another guitarist here. I'm a bit of a guitar tech in my spare time too, I love tinkering. But again, we're on a Linux forum so I'd guess most of you guys are too :lolflag:
I've modified every piece of hardware I currently have except a couple of pedals and one amplifier (vox VT15). I built a few pedals, modify pretty much everything that produces distortion and can't help but torturing every innocent guitar that falls into my Machiavellian hands.
My main guitar's a 2002 Highway1 Strat I bought in Poitiers brand new on boxing day 2007. Yeah, she was in the shop this long, strings all black. Strummed her once and I knew she could become an incredible axe. She's got a Bareknuckle Crawler at the bridge and two Seymour Duncan single coils. I also changed the electronics (wired the 5 way with an auto split so the HB is split automatically in position 4) and changed the saddles to graphtech ones as the stock saddles couldn't get the strings high enough for me.
If you couldn't guess by my incessant rambling, I love this guitar :D
Also got a Charvel Model 4 (1986), my first guitar which I got when I started playing (February 2005, I'm still a noob!) and which was the source of most of my Frankenstein-like tinkering, and a Highway 1 Telecaster, all black, which I modified with a 4 way switch (to add series wiring).
And of course because this thread is useless without pictures and I'm a little conceited about my gear, here are the obligatory gear shots:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y300/PierreEmmanuel/DSCF0099.jpg
The delay has been replaced by a CoolCat vibe I modified. I have LOADS of spare, unused pedals too. The big black box is a Carl Martin Hot Drive and Boost prototype. I actually modified it as well, changed the clipping section for something of my own brew.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y300/PierreEmmanuel/DSCF0097.jpg
Cannabis Rex speaker, and I replaced all the big filter caps.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y300/PierreEmmanuel/DSCF0095.jpg
Gotta love dinosaur technology! How many of these would I need to run Ubuntu..?
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y300/PierreEmmanuel/DSCF0064.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y300/PierreEmmanuel/DSCF0014.jpg
The M4, Strat and the now sold Edwards LPC (which I also modified, changed the hardware and pickup for Gotohs and Bareknuckle Riff Raff at the bridge. The M4 got all its electronics ripped out, a Seymour Duncan Jazz (best metal pickup I ever played!) and some fancy wiring.
I got way more gear than needed for my skills, but thankfully I'm a better player than I am a photographer.

Hi all,
I started reading this thread about a week ago, and finally made it to the end. I joined the forum yesterday so I can contribute. I am so glad the thread isn't dead.
I've been using Ubuntu for almost 4 years. I've almost completely kicked my windows addiction(I still have windows on my laptop).
I tried learning to play guitar when I was in high school but gave up after a few months. two years I decided to try again. I tried to teach myself at first but that wasn't going well, and started taking lessons a year ago.
Advice for beginners: buy a guitar that screams at you to pick it up and play it.
get a guitar stand don't ever put it in the case except to transport it.
you are never to old to learn to play.
take lessons. A good teacher will know when to push you to do better. and can keep it interesting when you are getting bored or frustrated.

I had to do some work on that Tele not long ago so now she looks a bit naked. I permanently took the pickguard out to adjust the neck pickup. I got the right height now but I kinda like the bare look!

If you want to do some blues, "Tore Down" (done by Freddy King and more recently Eric Clapton) is a great song and fun to play.

I definitely want to learn some blues.
I listened to Tore Down, seems like it would be great if I could sing. If I try to sing I sound like tom cats trying to woo a female.
The Blues - my first love. Still - when I don't want to play I play the Blues, and the joy of playing comes back.
Technically Blues is not especially challenging, not more and possibly less than a lot of other genres. However, the less technically challenging something is the more it depends on interpretation of the guy playing it (Ask and dancer - the most difficult ones are the slow ones like Waltz and Ramba). Blues leaves a lot of room for you connecting with it.
When you do, it sends shivers done the spine of the audience (and sometimes yourself), if you don't, don't bother playing it.
Nothing worse than a Blues played without that connecting feeling from the player - brrrrrr.... it just becomes a flat string of notes.
While I am here - anything similar to "Guitar Alchemist" (http://www.guitaralchemist.com/) native to Linux or Ubuntu? I know I asked that before but it somehow got lost.

In a past life, (when I was a musician) I used to play a Maton CW80, a Maton BG (can't remember its number) it was a smaller footprint body, though it was thicker than a normal acoustic guitar. It was great for open tunings & slide, rigged with fairly heavy strings.
I also had an Ovation, no idea which model. It was the nicest acoustic guitar I ever played.
Had a few electrics, the only one worth mentioning was the heaviest (in weight) electric guitar I ever picked up (I was stronger then) it was a Les Paul Recording. Beautiful guitar. I also had a Kasuga mandolin, only sold it inside of the last 12 months. Musical instruments not being played is a terrible waste of resources.
I've not been a guitarist for over 20 years. Tendinitis got me. :(

well, all I can say is it's quite amazing what you can accomplish in almost 3 years.
I'm considering purchasing my first electric guitar . . . soon. I'm starting to get pretty good with the acoustics, but I'd like to hear some recommendations of good not too expensive guitars that I'm going to enjoy and play for years, I'd like to keep it within the $350 and under (though, I probably can't really afford 300, but you never know :P.)
one of my first pots to this thread. over 2 years ago haha. a lot has changed for me in many ways as far as my internal thoughts and actions with guitar, and my actual playing ability.
I had one of the more fun guitar learning experiences I suppose; as I didn't stop getting better at any point, I literally progressed week by week. and to this day, I'm still progressing. I'm on the verge of making several songs. I have recorded songs before, which I consider good. but I don't want to share them as I don't think they truly express what my current state of playing is all about.
hopefully I'll keep up with you guys enough to get some recordings on this. will check back later.

Hey guys. I'm assuming some of you use creox or have used. When I plug in and play through creox it sounds garbled as if the sample rates are different but they're not. I've been messing with it for a while and I've posted but no luck. Anyone got any Ideas? Also playback is only mono.

My Fender Princeton 650 had the digital tuner fail. The amp was 4 years 10 months onto the 5 year warranty. Fender could not fix the tuner. The parts were no longer available. The tuner would kick off when I would pluck a string and it would turn the tuner off. Fender replaced the amp with a FM65-DSP, the latest version of the 65 watt amp. I now have a brand new amp with another 5 year warranty. I think I will stick with Fender amps since they back-up their product so well.

Hey guys. I'm a very active guitarist. I'm currently deployed to Iraq. I'm looking for a decent guitar that I won't have to worry about breaking or be sad getting rid of. I know last deployment I just bought the cheapest guitar package I could find and I was miserable with it. It was horrible. Well I don't want that again. I've been looking at the epiphone wilshire remake package and It's got some good reviews and some bad. I normally play a 2005 american delux hss strat with the lsr nut and s1 switching through a peavey xxl half stack. Or my '89 american strat.

I don't know anything about the Wilshire but it sounds like you are a Strat guy, have you tried the Squire? Maybe that's what you already tried and why you are looking for something else though.

Yea I am a strat guy. I hate squier. I order the wilshire today so hopefully it doesn't sound like crap. I already know that the neck pick-up is going to sound like crap. I've never heard a double waxed neck pick-up that i've liked. Comes with a epiphone studio 15r amp witch is probably garbage but it'll do.

Why not treat yourself to some amps and effects with a Line6 Pod or Pocket pod Express , you can happily blast along along with just headphones or through a clean amp setting (even a set of powered PC speakers would do) disguising any 'faults' with the output from the wilshire...

I was debating on doing that. I have creox but when I play my buddies electric into it,it sounds garbled like the sample rates are off. I have both Jack and Creox set at the same sample rates though. I figured it was something going from analog to digital cause I only get a mono output.

might help with creox.
I just installed creox to see what was what, but the minute I discovered jack was required I stopped... I had no luck at all with it and Ardour last year, spent an age messing with it.. and I already have a Line6 PodXT live...
The Line6 units are standalone hardware, just plug in the guitar and pass the output to headphones or an amp of some description (eg your Epiphone Studio or direct to powered PC speakers, not the PC itself) sorry if that was not clear in my last post

any other uses a gibson sg classic ?
I got one a month ago . still paying of on it but I been playing guitar since I was fourteen and I record my own songs on harddisc recorder so I always wanted a good intrument. I like the sound of gibsons. and fenders but they are very pricey here in Denmark.
I love my gibson even I play more on a vintage levin nylong string . and I play slide guitar on a epiphone acoustic also. these acoustics are standing next to my table in the living room so I tend to sit and watch movies while practicing. I play severeal hours a day. pick up the gibson late at night and enjoy the clean sound through the harddisc recorder. I sometimes use a distortion pedal from boss. but this electric guitar is the very first one I ever played that sounds amazing with clean tone in any postion of the settings on pickups and volume knobs.
I played on a lot of crappy guitars because I cant afford the good ones. this makes me very happy that I finnally are able to play on at least two good intruments. the levin and gibson that is .....
I would like to know what the prices are on such second hand guitar in other parts of the world. I think I got a fair deal on mine but I also seen others ask for the exact same as mine but it seems to be out of production or is not exported to dk anymore. it has the p90 pickups.

These sort of prices for an SG ???
1963 Polaris White Gibson SG Special – s/n105078 (128658)
This guitar was owned by Clint Nurse (of the band Beaver) from late 1978, and sold via Christie’s auction (below), 29 September 2004, for £85,000 (estimated £35,000) to an unknown telephone bidder, a record for a Pete Townshend owned guitar.
Current prices for new SG's seem to range from GBP 600 to GBP 3000 and above! The P90 was an early design , discontinued mid 1970's and then brought back for some reissues and custom ranges..... so how old is your SG?

No, this thread rumbles on, lies dormant for a bit, then a new bit of kit is bought or a new guitar player arrives and like the phoenix it bursts back into life... as an aside..my latest student tried to give me a Zoom G7 effects processor simply because he did not know what it did and could not make sense of the instruction book!
I took it back to him ,having read the instructions, and demonstrated the capabilities to show him what he would be giving away ... (mind you, if I had not already got a Pod XTLive and Variax I would have been tempted to keep it...)

I started playing at 17 when my sister was given a guitar, even though i was the one who wanted guitars, drums, keyboards, harmonicas, etc... but i'll spare you the psychotherapy session.
Economics and common sense keeps me from buying the guitars i want, therefore i own sub $700 acoustics and electrics. Most of what i play is by ear and free-form, but i do enjoy certain ditties. Recently i found Ani DiFranco playing Present/Infant on the YouTube Billboard channel. After noticing she had acrylic nails on her strumming hand i ran out to the nearest mani/pedi spot and got all digits on my right hand done, excluding the pinkie. This is now my preference for acoustic finger-picking.
One axe i've always wanted to own was an Yngwie Malmsteen model Strat. The scalloped frets feel good when i pretend to be able to shred. :guitar: John McLaughlin also plays with scalloped frets. Anyone who hasn't would do well to listen to the old Shakti sessions. Daniele Gottardo's Guitar Idol 2009 final exhibition was rifrickindiculous, as well.

I am building a new guitar and have designed new headstock stickers.
I play a Fender Strat and have for years, and the new stickers reflect my new logo for my new project and the new logo for the t-shirts, stickers and promo items that are sold at shows and festivals.
I wanted my newest creation to have the new logo made into a decal not unlike the original Fender decals installed on the guitars when they are new. But since this isn't an original Fender guitar but a custom guitar made to my specs, I decided to design a new decal with the new logo integrated into the design.

Nice gear is nice to have, but I play a Squire and it's not the guitar, it's who's playing that guitar.
It's the same with tools. A good mechanic can make his living with cheap tools, but a bad mechanic has a hard time making money because he doesn't know how to use the tools he has.
Case in point, I stay very busy, and my main rig is a Squire Strat and a small 1962 Airline amp (5-8 watts, all tube) that i recently had rebuilt. Great simple rig. But I don't have to go for high gain sounds, so it works well for me.

Is this guitar a Fender with your own modifications ?
It's a custom made Strat design guitar. It is not made by Fender but uses the Fender specs from many different years to make my ultimate guitar.
It is an alder body painted with Fender's Butterscotch Blonde (slightly transparent), hard tail bridge, unknown pickups at this time (still trying out different set ups), a 57-61 Fender maple neck but with a 10.5 radius fingerboard and Fender's smaller frets from the early 70's, some kind of special nut my guitar builder has been using and probably the standard Gotoh non-locking tuners.
I don't think that anyone will be able to tell this guitar from anything coming from the Fender Custom Shop and anything else. There is nothing fancy about it, just a nice setup for my needs and purposes.
I'll post pics when it gets back in my hands.

Dang it! I ordered the wrong decal paper.
I needed the transparent type for the head stock but what I actually ordered was the white background material.
It's not that big of a deal but I was going to install one on the rear of a head stock on another guitar today just for practice when I discovered my mistake.
I'm will find a local hobby store with this material tomorrow and take care of this issue.
Here's a pic of the sheet - with one missing - with the three logo's on it.
The backwards logo was one I did by leaving the highlighted or "shiny" parts of the artwork and taking out the orangey yellow color and making the formerly colored in areas transparent then coloring in the spaces where there is no color with a gold paint pen to get closer to the original Fender colors.
If this works I will use this technique on the final product.
EDIT:
OK - got the clear sheets printed, ink dried, sprayed with sealer (so the ink won't come off while in the water) and cut out and installed on a test piece of wood.
I cleaned the already lacquered wood with alcohol to get rid of the dirt and grease from my fingers.
I then placed an already cut and trimmed water slide decal into a bowl of warm water with one to two drops of dish washing liquid in it to help move the sticker around on the wood after it releases from the backing paper. Only takes about a minute or less for the decal to release from the backing.
I took my fingers and wet the wood slightly with the slightly soapy water from the bowl then removed the water slide sticker from the bowl and started the process of sliding it off of the backing paper onto the test wood.
It starts off a little wavy but you simply take a dry paper towel and start blotting from the middle outwards to get rid of the excess water and make the decal stick. Be careful not to move the sticker during this process, but if you do move it back with your fingers gently but firmly (I know, just try it and you'll get the picture) and continue drying the decal. Do not rub the decal until it is completely dry and stuck to the wood.
This process only took a couple of minutes, but the results look like I spent hours. The final product looks like I printed right on the wood.
I used Testor Decal paper for inkjet printers, a good photo printer and a Testor #9200 decal kit that merely includes a can of clear sealer for the decals. This stuff is available at the local Hobby Lobby (in the US) or any other local hobby shop (radio controlled card, planes and trains).
I learned that what looks good on the computer screen may not look so good when the decal is actually applied to the surface with which you are working. Plain and simple colors without any computer generated highlighting of the image or lettering looks the best.
But overall this is an easy process if you follow the decal paper directions that come with the water slide printer paper and anyone could custom label computers, guitars, appliances or any other device that one usually sees decal type labeling on them.

Out of the three logo's I printed up and installed on my "test wood", I only like the plain StevenEddy logo.
The one with the "highlights" or the one I colored in that I left the highlights in the design suck in my opinion.
I will make new stickers today removing the highlights and make a couple that are reversed with no highlights that I can color with the gold paint pen to see how that looks.
Hoping for the best.
Am I the only one who make their own headstock logos for custom instruments?
EDIT:
I think this is the final design.
Here is pic of the mock up on a pre-existing guitar.

Just curious I have a Telecaster and G&L Legacy .

Just curious I have a Telecaster and G&L Legacy .
I have thought about going the G&L route many times.
I feel they are great guitars, but when it came time for this new build, they just didn't have what I was looking for, namely a hard tail bridge.
And Fender has hard tail bridges, but I either didn't want a mahogany fingerboard or the electronics weren't desirable to me.
Is your G&l Legacy a sunburst model? Do you play professionally or semi-professionally?
Also tell me about your amp setup with that Tele.

My G&L is a cherry burst , the owner of the local music store went to a trade show and brought a few back and I loved the look and the sound . They did not buy anymore because few people new that G&L was founded by Leo Fender and thought it was a another Strat copy.
Now the closest retailer is 50 miles away. As for playing , I haven't been paid for a while , I play some open mic nites at a coffee shop with a wide range of people from different musical backgrounds and the pay scale for bands is generally pretty low in this area. The club owners have a hard time making a profit with live music. Recently "Hair Metal " and "Classic Rock" cover bands are what you will see at many local outdoor festivals.

What's your amp setup when you play out or rehearse?
I'm actually more into amps than guitars. Although I'm pretty excited about this new guitbox I'm building now.

Awful quiet on this thread lately. I just bought an Ovation elect/acoustic on ebay. Its a real beauty. Solid spruce top, sunburst finish. Actually, they call it Tuscan Sunburst, must be the shade of orange they use. Gotit as a refurb, so it cost me $100 less than a new one. But it was refurbed by the Ovation people so I trust it is "like new"
I put Ernie Ball Earthwood 12s on it, and it sounds really deep, rich, I love it. Now, I'm looking for a nice, used case for it, I'm looking at a Musicians Friend Dreadnaught case, its the right price ($50) and it is deep enough for my Ovation. Does anybody have an opinion about those MF brand cases ? For Acoustics ?
here's a pic of my new baby :

didn't even know this thread existed... :p
me trying to improvise, keeping it simple with just D minor pentatonic and failing miserably:

notes: turn your volume down a bit, i made that video and some others to test my cam and the sound, so it's not very good. also, it gets repetitive after 1 or 2 minutes, that's just me trying to remember licks that fit the backing chord progression and the camera never helps :p

My avatar picture is my home built Guit-o-min which is a guitar/theremin hybrid built out the ashes of a broken up Les Paul copy that I snapped the headstock off.
I made a bridge at the top to the neck, routed a shelf in the body to facilitate grover machine heads so it strung the opposite way round with the ballends at the top of the neck and tuning down at the bridge end. I then put a cutaway where the 'horn' used to be so I could fit my mini-theremin in with some vecro. There is a little flylead from the original electrics so the theremin sound mixes with the guitar sound down the same phono cable.
I can confirm it works and it doesnt sound too bad! :D
I also own a Gretch Duo-Jet solid body, a Curbow Bass, Yamaha RBX fretless bass and a Commodore semi-acoustic jazz guitar.

Anyone else tried the iso of GNUguitarInux?
If only I could get my head round the peculiarities of JACK and the various arcane workings of Sound hardware I might actually get it working ...
Until then I will have to make do with the recent free gift of a Fostex recording mixer and mixing down into the analogue in port to record with Audacity...

I play a Epiphone SG (pic on my profile) most of the time since I got it, but I also have a seagull acoustic and some other brand classical that my grandpa used to own. I also have a mandolin.

haven't been back here in awhile.... still rockin it up as usual.
been actually looking into distortion/overdrive pedals since software-amp modeling is really not that great as I thought it would be...
tied between these two pedals...

trying to get a pedal that I can have streaming singing shredding leads with good smooth overdriven rhythms....
so far those two pedals are the only ones I've seen among the best selling distortion/overdrive pedals on musicians friend...
if anyone else knows of something like these but better definitely let me know!

Is there any good recording software out there for Linux that compares to Acid functionality, or Garage Band, or even more advanced than these?

Ardour is my favorite. Audacity is another good option.

Hi everyone. I just started playing guitar a while ago, and my frets tend to buzz. What is the proper way of putting your fingers on the frets?

Hi everyone. I just started playing guitar a while ago, and my frets tend to buzz. What is the proper way of putting your fingers on the frets?
Close to, but not touching the metal. Bend wrist (more naturally achieved by NOT tucking your elbow into your side... when first learning you try to attain death grip on the neck of the guitar to press harder - and this is why your elbow tucks itself in. This is WRONG..
But if you keep your elbow away from your side the arm levers the fingers exerting better pressure on the strings and provides better bridging of the hand so other strings do not get muffled...

If you do what Zimmer said and still have buzzing it could be that the action on your guitar or truss rod need adjusting.

hey guys it's been a while but I know there's some electric guitar tech's in here that could help me...
my buddy worked on my guitar (a dean flying V that you can't find anymore..) and had the input jack put on the outside of the V instead of the inside so I can play it with my leg sitting within the V....
anyways, there is no electrical buzz when I turn it on plugged not touching the strings... but the second I touch the strings I hear the buzzing... then if I touch another knob at the same time it stops the buzz.. which means there's an open ground loop somewhere... but how do I fix this?? I don't want to have to wait weeks for my buddy to come back.

I did a search on this site for "how to make a music video" and I couldn't find a post or article that described this. Only posts that talk about video cards, video ram, etc.
I was hoping that some member of this particular thread would be a beginner guitarist who can teach me anything about setting up a camera and separate microphone, recording your guitar using a dinky mic and a kodak digital camera, (I can't afford a good HD video cam, not yet) or maybe just using whatever came with your cellphone.
I have an Ovation acoustic/electric, a little 15 watt amp, an old digital camera (7 MP , can do video at 10 fps) and I have a little microphone from Radio Shack. I know I can dig this up somewhere else, but I would like to try to get it from here first.
There are so many good guitar players on this thread, I'm sure some of you have made music videos. Share some tips and advice with me. Thanks:guitar:

as far as I know, people making music videos have the song already recorded, then they simply match the actions of the song with the video.
so get your song recorded first, then go about mocking the actions of playing it, add some cool video effects, make sure everything is in sync, voila, music video.
and on another note I fixed the grounding issue with the flying V :)

For simple playing to camera style videos:Unless you have a way of recording line-in to the PC then the best way to do this is exactly as you describe and then synching the superior audio with the video. Remove the audio from the video.

A potential compromise with your equipment could be plugging your Ovation into the PC soundcard , recording the Guitar at the same time as recording the video with the camera.
Potentially you could then strip the audio from the video file (Avidemux? Openshot video editor?) and replace it with the better quality direct guitar recording.
(OTOH if you wanted to sing as well.... then you will have to start searching for more equipment :( )

Zimmer,
This sounds like it might work for me. But I would have to find/buy a DI ? is that the little box where you plug the 1/4" guitar plug and then plug a 3.5 mm to the PC ? My PC is actually a little ACER netbook. I always wanted one of those DIs .
Are they very expensive ? Tell me in Dollars, not Pounds.
