Hi,

incompatible kernel module comes up here too.

Any ideas so far??

Thank you tons for the guide, maqi. I managed to get the ATi drivers up and running for my work machine (the Kubuntu version of Breezy) with the information in the guide. I had a little hassle that I managed to work my way through.

Originally, I ended up with this exact same problem:

I also have tried your method & get output from fglrxinfo about MESA. I have a Radeon Mobility 9000. You asked if the module could be loaded. When trying sudo modprobe fglrx
I get the following error msg:
FATAL: Error inserting fglrx (/lib/modules/2.6.10-5-386/kernel/drivers/video/fglrx.ko): Operation not permitted
I installed the restriced-modules, but apt-get indicated that it was already installed. Also xorg-driver-fglrx. I edited the xorg.conf by hand.

Valthonis had suggested on page 5 that dropping out to the console then stopping X was required prior to installing the restricted modules and the driver. I found that this in itself wasn't enough - I did just that and still had the same problem.

What I found was that although X is stopped, there was still a hierarcy of modules conspiring to screw me over and prevent fglrx from being loaded. I don't have the text that lead me to this, but it looked as if "drm" module was preventing this from working properly.

By killing off this module then doing the install, I was able to get everything to work. I can't tell you if it was the install that this module was messing up or just the loading of fglrx - I didn't do that much poking around.

Assuming everything that follows is executed in the console with X disabled, here's how I did it:

Unload the drm module that causes problems. Since this is in use by radeon, that has to go, too:
sudo modprobe -r radeon drm

Uninstall the driver and restricted modules:
sudo apt-get remove linux-restricted-modules-<your-kernel-version> xorg-driver-fglrx

Reinstall:
sudo apt-get install linux-restricted-modules-<your-kernel-version> xorg-driver-fglrx

If wanted, install the control panel again - it got yanked when the driver was uninstalled:
sudo apt-get install fglrx-control

At this point, everything should now be set up as needed. Time for the moment of truth:
sudo modprobe fglrx

Hopefully this now successfully loads the driver. If so, you can jump back into X to bask in your hardware-accelerated glory.

I've tried just about everything, I just finished closing XDE completely and modprobe -r fglrx and redownloading and reinstalling and i just cant seem to get fglrxinfo to report ATI instead of MESA, if anyone can help me that'd be great.

I'm on Kubuntu 5.10 w\ ATI Radeon 9200 SE - I'm on IRC, feel free to msg me

I must say that this is the only guide that gets my ati drivers working. All I've done is what is in the original post of this thread from a clean install of Ubuntu Breezy. I wish I could help more, but the more in depth it gets, the more confused I get. Good luck all.

1) I added the subsection about omitting xfree86-dga under load extmod, but did not remove the original Load "extmod" line.

This finally solved it for me. This howto was really helpful, thanks a lot!:D

hello all/ first thanks for the guide. although i did not use it its still good.

what i did to configure my x800gt was to use the vesa driver.. (since i did not need 3d ) i want to know are there any features aside from 3d accel that thje ati drivers provide.....?

Hi folks, new convert to Ubuntu here.. Gave up on Fedora 3 due to hardware issues and now here I am stuck again :)

Ok so I originally installed the xorg-driver-fglrx package using the Synaptic Package Manager. Managed to successfully (re)edit my xorg.conf to the point where I can boot with the screen res+refresh rate that I wanted and I am confident it has been correctly updated as per the instructions in this thread. I have since at least 3 times reinstalled the xorg-driver-fglrx from the console using apt-get whilst gdm (and radeon and drm) were stopped. Unfortunately I am still getting the following result from 'fglrxifo':

libGL error: drmMap of framebuffer failed
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.2 (1.5 Mesa 6.2.1)

I have an ATI Raedon 9600 XT and I am running Ubuntu 5.1 Breezy Badger X86-64 on my athlon 64 system.
I noticed the following lines appear in my /var/log/Xorg.1.log:

(WW) fglrx(0): ***********************************************
(WW) fglrx(0): * DRI initialization failed! *
(WW) fglrx(0): * (maybe driver kernel module missing or bad) *
(WW) fglrx(0): * 2D acceleraton available (MMIO) *
(WW) fglrx(0): * no 3D acceleration available *

I also note that the same lines do not seem to appear in my /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(what is the difference by the way?)

I'm not sure what else I am required to do to enable the hardware acceleration, I have read through this thread and other similar reference several times and I can't see what I have missed?
Anyway here's my xorg.conf FYI:

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#

Well in the end it turns out I was more successful by starting from scratch with this HOWTO: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=423584
This set of instructions worked for me first time, following every step pretty much verbatim..

:~$ fglrxinfo

OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9600 XT Generic
OpenGL version string: 2.0.5642 (8.22.5)

event

I can't seem to get this working. I have a 9000 Mobility.

I followed the instructions fo installation of the drivers, but X always fails and I have to restore my old xorg.conf file.

I followed the instructions for reinstallation of the drivers, but when I try "sudo modprobe fglrx" i get the error message: FATAL: Error inserting fglrx (/lib/modules/2.6.12-10-386/volatile/fglrx.ko): No such device
What is the deal with that?

Dude, you have saved me hours of frustration! Much thanks!

I have a Dell Inspiron XPS (first Gen) and just installed Ubuntu. I've been trying to figure out why graphics seemed so lame. I new it was probably something in a .conf file somewhere, but was going down the wrong paths.

Stupid me, I'll know to start at the forums first next time.

Thanks Again!

Just a thing. I (think I) did what the howto said but it didn't work. I still get

(~)) fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.2 (1.5 Mesa 6.4.1)

Anyway, I'm not asking how to fix this. All I'm asking is how I can get rid of the fglrx and revert back to the ubuntu driver.

Any help?

I think that when you get the Mesa thing, it's because something is wrong with your linux-restricted-modules-(uname -r). I was playing around with it last night and updated and things got broke so I installed a new linux-restricted-modules-(uname -r) (via apt-get) and fglrxinfo worked out again.

Hello, What i am trying to do is this. I have a Radeon 9600 card and I would like to have 2 main display resolutions, 1 for normal comp usage and second for when I want to watch TV it would be at a lower resolution. The TV-out works great i can see it on my tv but the resolution is too big so lowering it would fit the tv screen. I would like to have a shortcut key to change it when I would like ot watch a movie if possible. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advanced !!

I have been using Debian for a VERY long time, but I just installed ubuntu for one of my sons. First, I have to way that I was really impressed with the installation. It found everything, including wireless.

I have a Radeon 9550 graphics card in the AGP slot. I followed your instructions and the installation completed without incident. The problem is that the xorg.conf file has the following listing:

Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Technologies, Inc. RV350 AS [Radeon 9600]"
Driver "vesa"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

I would have expected the ati driver to show up. Any comments?

I've got an IBM Thinkpad A21 with a mobility 9000 ATI chipset. The default "ati" driver works fine, but when I try to install the fglx driver, I run into trouble. I running Ubuntu 6.06 by the way. I first installed the linux restricted modules. Once that finished, I installed the ATI driver. I modified the xorg.conf file (after backing up my old one :) ) and rebooted. Any suggestions? The chipset seems to be supported, at least it's on the list. Thanks!

This HOWTO (almost) worked for me. However, when I rebooted the screen just went blank once GDM was supposed to come up.

I have an AMD64 version of Dapper Drake (6.04). My graphics card is a Radeon Sapphire X1600XT.

I spent several hours trying different things and using different instructions. Finally, I discovered that I needed to remove the line:

Load "extmod"

and replace it with:

SubSection "extmod"
Option "omit XVideo"
Option "omit XVideo-MotionCompensation"
Option "omit XFree86-VidModeExtension"
EndSubSection

This is different than the suggestion made by Flavio Stanchina (http://xoomer.alice.it/flavio.stanchina/debian/fglrx-installer.html), which is the major part of your HOWTO.

Flavio makes the mistaken replacement of:

SubSection "extmod"
Option "omit xfree86-dga"
EndSubSection

I don't know if it is because his advice is geared towards XFree86 instead, or what, but his suggestion DOES NOT WORK (for AMD64, anyway).

I thought I would share this, in case others are experiencing the same difficulty.

ok, I think I've messed up pretty bad...

I went and installed the rpm from the ATI website because I thought it would be a good driver and would fix my TV out on my ATI Radeon 9600.

BAD MOVE!

I've lost direct render. Everything is moving so slow. No gxl. no compiz. nothing....

Is there a way to back out of this driver or install a correct video driver to get everything back up and going again?

HELP!

Hi,

I'm having problems with my ATI Radeon 9600 XT card. I have 2 users on my systems, and when i try to switch to the other user, GNOME just quits to terminal and hangs. If i use the original settings (MESA) it works, but i want to use the "real" settings for my card.

Anyone else seeing the same behaviour when switching user?

This is my current xorg.conf (used from first post in this thread, with some changes for my setup):

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using

I've followed the guide in the first post with no luck, and i've tried this one aswell: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI

Is this a known bug or am i doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance

how do I find out what linux kernel I'm using?

sudo apt-get install linux-restricted-modules-<your-kernel-version> xorg-driver-fglrx

max_j_fischer

To find out your kernel version, you can do "uname -r" at the command line. You could also just do it in your command to get the package:

sudo apt-get install linxu-restricted-modules-`uname -r`

i am getting a problem similar to max_j_fischer, specifically:
(II) LoadModule: "GLcore"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libGLcore.so
dlopen: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libGLcore.so: undefined symbol: __glXLastContext(EE) Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libGLcore.so
(II) UnloadModule: "GLcore"
(EE) Failed to load module "GLcore" (loader failed, 7)

which appears to be the only error in my Xorg.0.log

I am using the radeon driver to run my Radeon IGP 340M (rs200 chipset).

brilliant. worked great for me. however, there are two things that i have to say:
1. after restarting the X server, i had a lot of weird artefacts on my display (random lines and dots), that disappeared only after i restarted the whole system
2. i still get the same artefacts (only in a much smaller quantity - see screenshot). i had this same problem on windows quite some time ago, as expected, caused by those damn drivers.

my gfx card is an ati radeon 9550 gt made by gecube. if anybody knows any solution to this please reply, i really don't want to revert back to my non opengl environment :)

As much as I hate to bump an oldish post...

I am having some problems getting 3d accel working...

I have killed my x system twice now trying to do it a lone, so I am nervous.

Here is my xorg.conf, if someone could help me edit it I would really appericate it

As much as I hate to bump an oldish post...

I am having some problems getting 3d accel working...

I have killed my x system twice now trying to do it a lone, so I am nervous.

This is my first ATI card, I'm normally an nVidia user but the laptop was a gift

I'm having the same problems on my iBook - yes, I know its a mac, and I should probably be reprimanded for having one and so on, but surely there is some decent Radeon PPC drivers out there? I really miss my 3d acceleration](*,)
Alternatively, should I be able to get my OSX drivers out?

OK, first, your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file looks pretty messed up. We'll have to do some cleaning. However, I should tell you that I am pretty busy right now (it's saturday and I am on my university's office, so imagine). That just goes to advise that answers might not be lightning quick. But here goes my question:
What is your hardware? I'm interested in the GPU model and the screen (model, resolutions).
What distro are you running? Dapper or Edgy?

The thing is, I doubt your screen supports 4095*4095 resolution ;). Ah! and all those wacom devices are proably useless to you unless your laptop is a tablet pc.

PS: With the list I'm mixing LaTeX syntax and HTML. Oh sh*t

You shouldn't feel guilty for buying an iBook. It's not bad to buy pretty good hardware (I personally love Powerbooks). However, I don't know either your iMac's resolution or your graphics card (probably an ATi 9200). Could you tell me, please? Knowing your distro wouldn't hurt either.

BTW: There are no proprietary drivers (ATi or nVidia) for PowerPC Macs. However, you have a pretty good chance of getting 3D to work with the free r300 (free!!! multiarch!!!). I have my ATi Mobility Radeon working perfectly (2D and 3D) with it.

FYI,

1.2/1.3 mesa not 2.0 displayed when running flgrxinfo.

I found out on my system that if you have composite enabled it says 1.2, and if disabled is displays 2.0.

Something that isnt well known, so something to consider.

Graphics Card: Ati Radeon Xpress 1100
Resolution: I normally run at 1024x768 or 1280 x 768(?)
I'm running Dapper

I just did a fresh install and here is what I've done so far.

Updated the system.

uname -r to get verison

$ sudo apt-get install linux-restricted-modules-2.6.15-27-386

$ sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx

sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Add fglrx to driver

restart x

BAM x doesn't come up, restore old x system

I think I may have gone wrong somewhere, but I'm not sure where

Could you post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file?

BTW: Are you running a laptop? Is it widescreen? Because there is *a lot* of difference between 1024*768 (standard 15 inch desktop resolution) and 1280*768 (16:9 widescreen aspect ratio, typical of 13.3, 14.1 and some 15.4 models). Please note that 1280*800 and 1280*768 are actually different resolutions.

I can't get the ATI drivers to work. I got a Radeon 9250 or 9200 (don't know exactly). Everytime I try to install the drivers, when Ubuntu's log in window comes up, no signal is sent to my screen. However, Ubuntu does not crash: I can hear it is initializing.
- OS: Edgy Efy
- Processor: AMD64 3000+
- Screen: TFT 19"

At first, I installed Ubuntu for AMD64. I had the above described issue. As I had some problems finding 64-bit packages, I reinstalled Ubuntu for 32 bit. However, I got the same problem after trying to install the ATI driver.
I attached two xorg.conf. One is my old one, which is working but without the driver working, the new one is crashing as explained above.
Can someone help me solving this problem?
I also tried this guide (http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Edgy_Installation_Guide). (Actually, on my 64-bit installation, I started with that one. But I got the same error now when using the guide of the start post)
With regards

At the end of your xorg.conf add

Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "disable"
EndSection

This needs to be there as the Ati drivers at the moment don't support the composite extension.

What do you mean exactly? My card (a Radeon 9200) would not send any video signal to the monitor when the log in screen should have come up. Is that the same problem as you had with the option turned to 'off'? Then I'm going to try it, otherwise, I don't.

hi everybody, its been a while since i've used linux, so forgive me if i miss anything.

i followed the howto to the letter, however i get
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.2 (1.5 Mesa 6.5.1)

It seems as though fglrx isn't even being initialized, however when i do lsmod|grep fglrx i get
fglrx 406988 0
agpgart 34888 2 fglrx,nvidia_agp

so i checked /var/log/Xorg.0.log and fglrx doesn't have a single entry, its all radeon. here's an except of the log:

i'm at a loss. i've googled the free86-drm line, and found a few useful things and tried them all, but nothing happens.
i even shutdown X, did sudo modprobe -r radeon drm and removed the restricted-modules and fglrx packages, adn then reinstalled them before restarting X to no avail. I get NO error messages of any kind, except Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".

Any ideas?

Thanks!

(I'm quoting myself)
I found a thread (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=151242) where people have the same problem. However, they're linking to a forum which does not exist anymore. Basically, the solution should have something to do with 'Modelines' inside the xorg.conf. However, I actually don't know how to use that option and the thread is closed.
Does someone know here how to use that option for my Radeon 9200?

Hey Elvish Legion!

I'm using Gentoo on a Acer Aspire 5050-3205, with the same ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 with a widescreen 1280x780 14,1'' screen. I tried to install ATI proprietary drivers and the screen just got black and didn't work.

What did you do to make it work?

Can you post me your xorg.conf?

Thanks very much...

Best regards,
Tiago.
