The twelfth podcast mentioned about knetwork manager in Kubuntu, I have tried it with SuSE and many people have also had the same problem with wep networks, aswell as the fact that it didn't work ever for ad-hoc network and apart from moving to another distro, I don't believe is still fixed. So it isn't Ubuntu / Kubuntu's fault to blame.

My biggest problem with Ubuntu / Kubuntu wireless cards have been very buggy, broadcom (open source) using the firmware extractor doesn't work correctly and cannot connect and ndiswrapper doesn't work ever - basically segmentation fault in the kerenel. Also the rt2500 / rt 2570 native driver has been very buggy and even though has been tryed to be fixed in updates never worked. This has been the biggest issue why I have not followed Ubuntu in Dapper - moved primarily to Gentoo until they sort the issue out.

Regarding your custom build of Ubuntu - one thing that would be great to talk about is i386 builds of programs. This supports processors back to the early intel 386 versions of processors before pentium, however there is a minimum system requirements, not sure what it is but why don't Ubuntu just default to i586 or even i686 - basically all pentium 4 and 3 processors supported. I had to upgrade my computer's memory because it couldn't cope, even though it was the earliest pentium 4 available. In what direction is Ubuntu striving for compatibiltiy verse efficient performance?

your are saying you have had the wep problem with Knetworkmanager in Suse as well?

also im with you on the i586, i686 thing. I wish they would move to it and away from the i386 thing.

thanks for the comments on the cast,

There was an intesting discussion on this fact on the ubuntu-dev mailing list. The basic argument for keeping Ubuntu i386 was that there was no real advantage to moving to the i586 or i386 intruction sets.

I agree. Keep i386 platform for Server editions and move to i586/i686 for desktop, anyway you can not install Ubuntu/Kubuntu in other platforms because of there low resources, just text mode and that is not the Ubuntu/Kubuntu target.
