I am looking to replace my mouse. Currently using the original ball type mouse and want to go to a laser type. I am looking at the Logitech G5, MX1000 and G7 or the Gyration go 2.4 air mouse. Any suggestions as to these and whether you have been able to use them with Ubuntu? I read the writeups on them and they all say that they may work with other than Windows XP and Mac OS. That is not helpful as to whether they will work with Linux UBUNTU.
Any info would be appreciated.

I vote for a plain optical Logitech mouse. I have several and like them, they work well and cost about $20. All are happy with Linux, WinXP, and Win2k.
I also have some $4 Rosewell mice that actually works ok. I give them out when I build free PCs for the family. For $5 (now) you could buy 10 of them for one Laser mouse.
I bought a Kensington mouse and offered to send the POS back to the company at my own expense so they could shove it where the sun don't shine. It worked about 1/2 the time.
This is a list of the most reviews at Newegg you make the call. I'd save some money and use it for sumpin else personally.

I couldnt get that guide to work with dapper, however this (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=219894&highlight=logitech+mouse) guide works very well with my mx518.
on the subject of the mouse itself I can certainly recomend the mx518
you probably cant tell the difference between laser and optical (unless you are using it on a shiny surface) and the dpi changer is something that i find very useful for pixel presision work like picture editing.
imo the thing that you need to consider is whether you want a wired or cordless mouse.
If you want a wired one i would recomend the mx518,
If you wand a cordless one I would tend to lean towards the g7, as it has the dpi changers and is lighter than the mx1000, however you'd have to not mind breaking the bank to get it (not wothe the masive price tag imo)

just to clarify, you dont need the guide ive given to get the mouse working in ubuntu. following the quide allows you to use the extra buttons (forward and back buttons) reselusion change still works without following th guide.

Kilz,
I hadn't even considered trackballs. Why do you like them the most? I see that there are trackball prices all over the place. Was there a problem hooking the trackball up to UBUNTU?
I will have to go look in the store to see what the are like. That may be a good choice for me.
Thanks.

I love my marble mouse, its a lodgitec. I like not having to move my hand all over, a flick of my finger moves the cursor across the screen. Its super easy to clean, not that it gets dirty much. I think its a lazer or some other optical technology.
I had no problems hooking it up, basicly plug it into where a mouse goes. But not all the buttons work off the bat. There are a few howto's that tell you how to enable them. As long as the 2 main ones worked I was happy. But I reciently added functions to the other 2 small ones. I also like the longevity, I still have one on my file server thats about 6 years old and works fine.

Okay, confession time.
I use a Microsoft (Gasp! ) Wireless optical mouse that I bought for $20 at Staples in January. I still am using the original battery. I plugged it in just to see if it worked, and it worked fine. Just for what it's worth... I guess if Microsoft stuck to making hardware (my mouse, Xbox), they wouldn't be half bad.:-&

Went to the store and checked out the Logitech Marble Mouse and loved it. Came home and ordered it and it will be here in a couple of days. Was there anything special you had to do to use it and was there anything further you had to do to use the other 2 buttons? I get the impression that the first two buttons and the marble work right out of the box but you have to do further work to get the other two buttons to work. Am I right? If so, what is the method to do to get the last two working?
Thank you for your suggestion. Worked fine and online had a great price.
Much appreciated. My birthday present to myself!! I'm worth it!! I think.

I think you will like it, they are not to expencive either. I used this post (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=77005)to set it up. Now the scroll works. While Im clicking on the button the trackball acts like a scroll wheel.

Mouse arrived this afternoon and I already got the setup done. It works beautifully and I no longer have to mess with the mouse ball on the bottom. It had gotten to the point that I had to clean the ball and socket at least 3 times a day and even then I had to practically run the damned thing off the table to get it to work.
Thanks, KILZ.:D :D

I know, I hated mice for that reason. You can pop the ball out and wipe the dust off the 3 ball berrings every so often to clean it. But you wont notice the same dirt build up that a regular mouse would have. :D
