View Full Version : Recruiting people to start the "Specto" project

Hi folks, I'm starting up a project which, I think, might interest some of you :) the thing is that we are only beginning, so we need to get some initial developpers to give opinions, "prepare the terrain", or should I say, help build the foundation for it. (There is no code yet)

It is planned to be done in Python. Please have a look at the website here:
http://specto.sourceforge.net (http://specto.sourceforge.net/)

I, myself, have no programming skills whatsoever, I'm only a designer, the project manager, and the weird kid that had that idea ;) since I don't want to clutter that topic, I will not paste a complete description of the software (which is called Specto), but instead give a small exerpt:
Specto is an “event notifier” for Linux, watching for every event that happens in real time and reports what happened while you were out (chat, website updates, emails, etc)
I have setup the sourceforge project, the project page, the blog and wiki, and I'm now entering the recruiting phase. So I thought I might post here first, in my favorite Linux community ;). Feedback is much appreciated! ^^ besides, if you got other suggestions as to "how to admin it all", say 'em! I'm totally new to this, and willing to learn.

Even if you don't want to get involved, you may share your ideas and questions here. They're important.

I could lend a hand here and there...
I got some experience with python (wrote severall small applications in it) (pygtk and some threading stuff).

But I am very busy, so don't expect me to be a full time coder.. but I could test/bughunt?

if you want me to help mail me: qball@qballcow.nl

Hello,
Very nice idea.....
Alas I'm not good enough to be a developer and can't spend enough of my spare time to be productive, but will CERTAINLY be a tester when something starts to appear....
Good Luck
John

Seeing as I'm not working on any major programs, and I like your idea, and your designs, I wouldn't mind giving a hand. I've been using Python for a few months, but been programming in other languages & markup's for over a year.

My SourceForge ID is daejuanj

I'd like to get in on this as well. I must admit I don't know python, but being experienced in Java, C++, and Ruby, I daresay I'll pick it up fairly quickly.

I guess, I've always wanted an app like this too. Especially the part about forum responses ;) Perhaps that's not a very good reason to join a project, but meh. My sourceforge Id is hikaru79 , sign me up and drop me a line at adrianp@cogeco.ca . I'll do my best! :)

You should feel right at home with Python, it is VERY similar to Ruby.

Although I cannot help right now (new to Python and caught up in project 'son'), this is really a very cool idea!

Hi hi, it is very nice to have this kind of feedback and interest (I have posted something similar in linuxquestions, and the thread went in a C vs Python flamewar, lmao)

So for now I'm adding you guys to the SF project, please join #specto on freenode (since this needs to be well forethought). The more the merrier :)

I would love to help this project, it seems like a very good idea! :) I have programmed Python for a few months, but i have longer experience with other languages like Delphi and PHP. What about setting up a IRC meeting day so everybody can discuss the project?

Edit: Oh, and my sourceforge name is "trygvebw".

I've been added to the SF team, and I'm on the IRC channel. It seems like a good idea to keep a meeting on IRC. So everyone, join up. There's only three of us there so far :-?

Had no idea about it, someone should setup a mailing list through Mailman for developers.

Hmm yeah, that's because I blogged it... oh well it looks like I'll have to dig about mailman sometimes. For now, there's not too much talking in the IRC chan, probably because it's not very populated, but I'll use this as a mean for direct feedback so.. it's better than nothing I guess. I'm doing some researches here and there, reading, trying to fix some stuff (such as the mediawiki php sessions problem on sourceforge, etc).
I'm not really sure of where to start yet, I admit, since I'm a new admin, I'm open to comments/tips/pointers as always ;) I wish to improve, but I just need some advice from time to time.

Side note for IRC users: I sometimes take a looooong time before realizing someone's talking to me. That is because x-chat is always minimized. If you got a more efficient way of being notified while reading docs, tell me ;) (except having dualhead lcds..). On top of that, I might get disconnected frequently due to my unstable ADSL.

Ok, I'm a PHP programmer, so if you need any help managing the site, let me know. Sessions was a pain in PHP4, somewhat fixed in PHP5.

I could also setup the mailing-list, as those are very useful.

Also, I use the X-chat IRC(standard w/ Ubuntu), and it's set to play a sound when a message is posted.

i'm not much of a programmer, but i'd be more than happy to contribue artwork (splash/icons/etc) if you like.

nice idea. hope it goes somewhere! :)

You can use Gaim for IRC and it will blink in the taskbar and/or plays sounds when there's new activity.

I'm learning python, so I'd be willing to help!!

My sf id is majikstreet just like my username here.

Assuming, of course, that you use the taskbar. I don't. I *never* iconify windows, and I've removed the iconify button from the openbox title bar. I prefer shading. I do however use the window selector applet.

Maybe you guys should contact the adminstrator about starting this project up. As it has gone nowhere since April.

Indeed it has gone around nowhere, I have been trying to teach myself python and I can only hack a little on it while I'm on the bus on my way to school ;) so far I've managed to put an icon in the tray (woohoo, a non-interactive one that is), and I'm doing the RSS parser...

edit: thanks for the help majikstreet :) the current work is towards making the web notifier work with HTTP headers and RSS feeds at once

About the website: it looks dead, but that's only because I decided I would not change its design and contents before I actually had a 0.0.1 release.

Hi everyone!

I'd like to help out with the project. I don't have much programming experience (just played around with Python for a couple weeks a while back), but I'll be learning Java next semester at school.

Actually, I'm pretty new to the whole Linux/OSS thing, but I'm really excited about all of it and want to learn how I can help out. I'm not sure what I'd be able to do, but if there's stuff like testing and checking for bugs that I can help with, I'd love to get involved.

Hi Kasanax, I'm happy to hear that :) don't worry, I'm a beginner too, and every hand is welcome. It would be even better if you knew how to handle graphical interfaces with pygtk ;) since I'm a little nervous about that...

Currently, we have a somewhat working web page watcher, however what severely lacks for now is:
- saving preferences
- displaying notifications in a gui... well that basically means slapping the gui and the backend together... but it depends on #1, which also depends on #2, vicious cycle ;)

Maybe you could try to catch me on #specto as "nekohayo", but my IRC presence is unpredictable, you can further reach us on the mailing lists.

I'm glad to see your interest, I mean it's easy to help out too, because this is my first project, and anything, including code, comments and suggestions, will help.

yo.. i downloaded it from the cvs but i cant find that SimpleApp stuff.. so i was unable to see it..

Can you tell me the deps please?

kiddo
January 3rd, 2006, 11:02 AM
Yes, there is a little problem that we aim to solve today or very soon: we have a difference between the cvs version that Pascal wanted to "cleanup" and the working folder I have, the two are not fully merged so there are things missing in CVS :(

The only thing I can do at the moment if you want to play with this is offer you a tarball from my computer ;) Specto.py is a little bit useless (playing with the GUI), watch_raw.py and watch_rss.py are the two watches we have now (and we would need to clean them up a little).

And now we are finishing our new awesome version :)

If you feel like it, please test out the development version (at the time of writing this, it is more featureful and more reliable than the 0.2 version!), and perhaps translate it into your own language! (see: http://groups.google.com/group/specto/browse_thread/thread/224e10df26f49c33 )
