View Full Version : How does adding spaces/lines in the Code of Conduct text help protect me?

At the page where I sign the code of conduct (https://launchpad.net/codeofconduct/1.0.1/+sign), I get a line saying:

If you want to, add extra spaces or blank lines between words in the file. (This helps protect against other people trying to forge your signature.)

I don't understand how this can help protect my identity. Please explain. Am I supposed to retain the space/line-modified code of conduct file to identify me later? I am not completing the procedure either way (by modifying or not) without a response from my good community here.

Please clarify. "To modify or not to modify - that is the question."

Disclaimer: I am not a Dev, this is inference

I assume the code of conduct is incorporated into a signature of some kind and sent somewhere in an encrypted form. Adding spaces at random to it protects the resulting message from a code-breaking technique called a "known-text" attack, which makes it easier to break a message's encryption if all or part of the mesage text is known in advance.
