Does anyone know how to get movie player to work with asx files that normally Windows Media Player uses? I get an error saying "no uri handler implemented for 'mms'".

You should try MPlayer (http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/news.html).
Works fine for me, I could open mms and rtsp streams without problems.

Hope that helps...

I am having difficulty getting the Movie Player (Totem) to work. I am using Ubuntu
desktop on my old Gateway. I receive error messages that I must install necessary
plugins. However, I have no clue as to how to install the plugins. Where can I
get the plugins? And once I find them, how do I download them and install them?

I am new to Ubuntu (as you can tell) and installed the desktop on my old PC
because I am tired of Windows XP and Internet Explorer keeps giving me error
messages that it has encountered problems and must shut down./

Any help would be appriciated.

Thanks,

Ed (Cpennyspal@msn.com)

Use Totem Gstreamer and use synaptic to install it so that most dependencies and plug-ins can be included as well.

Edit:
Totem-xine or anything that uses the Xine library works for me. I currently have no luck using gstreamer though.

KPlayer (MPlayer based) is far better than Totem. Plays practically everything out of the box, don't need to install any plugins, just make sure the required libraries like libavcodec, libavformat, libdvdcss are installed. Plays .asx playlists just fine for me as well.

How do you install KPlayer on Edgy without breaking things? I can install the deb on their homepage, but then everytime I update the system it gets removed due to some libraries not being at the proper version.
