I wasn't sure exactly where to post this, I was basically just wondering if anyone knew what was happening with rhythmbox, the player whose website (www.rhythmbox.org) hasn't had a news update since October 2004. More to the point, why is it that gnome has yet to feature a mature media player such as winamp, the one program I really miss from windows?

There is an 0.9 version that is actively being developed. Check the Rhythmbox Development List for details.

The only mature media player on Linux is xmms...which quite frankly sucks as far as aesthetic appeal is concerned. The GNOME folks look for something that blends in well with a GTK2 environment, and xmms doesn't cut it because it's GTK1 and the skins don't give it a uniform GNOME-like look and feel.

Well hopefully the rhythmbox developers will realise that trying to design the itunes for gnome is not much to aspire to! I don't mean to overly criticize the project, because I am comparing it to apps which have been around for a lot longer. I just see this as the one area of gnome that could really do with some serious work.

Try beep-media-player.

I also have BMP. While it used GTK2, the only places you can tell are the fonts and the dialogs. Everything else is skinned and doesn't blend in with the GNOME environment. With rhythmbox, all the widgets are drawn like all other GTK2 widgets, so it fits the environment better.

I'm not a rhythmbox fanboy (Heavens no!) but I understand why one might pick rhythmbox over xmms or bmp.

Beep is a step in the right direction, just add a media library, winamp plugin support and freeform skinning and I'll be a happy man lol

Beep Media Player is the way to go... It's simple, easy to use, and GTK so it's alright in gnome. However it's skins are independant of gnome which kinda sucks, however I dont care in my opinion.

The whole attraction of bmp to me is that it isn't skinned, I've been using winamp for years and years now, so that is what I'm used to. I'm more than willing to try media players, or any other piece of software. But because I use linux primarily for the web and multimedia, I need a GOOD media player, not rhythmbox.

There's also Muine. While it does not have that many features yet, it integrates nicely into the gnome look and is - imho - very easy to use.

Yes, Muine's pretty album picture rocks. It's still, deep down, rhythmbox mini with album artwork IMO.

Yep. The project on savannah was a GTK2 port of XMMS, and has now been removed. Info about the 'real' XMMS2 is on the XMMS2 wiki (http://wiki.xmms2.xmms.se/index.php/Main_Page).

If you look carefully, my page (http://eleusis.f2o.org/projects/xmms2/) links to the wiki, and my user page on the wiki (http://wiki.xmms2.xmms.se/index.php/User:Eleusis) links back to my site (http://eleusis.f2o.org). :P

The 'real members' are listed at http://wiki.xmms2.xmms.se/index.php/About#People_involved
