Well, I whas wondering if its worth getting cedega for half life 2? Because I can always install it on windows, just that I hate changing from Linux to stupid Windows every time to play a game. But still, if it will run MUCH better on windows then I am installing in on Windows, because I like to see the full eye candy.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Does HL2 use OpenGL for graphics rendering? I've heard that OpenGL games in some cases actually run better on GNU/Linux, because they don't have to run through DirectX's OpenGL compatibility layer then, and that sounds quite logical to me.

Windows will be significantly better for HL2 sadly, no OpenGl in HL2 only in the original.

I have heard that you can get hl2 running well, although you would need a nice graphics card with supported drivers(annoying, huh?). If you have an nvidia or intel card, you could play the game without much of a worry.
Good Luck!

I actually had better luck in Cedega under Linux. YMMV, but it's nice.

Aren't those the same thing you would need in windows to get the game running well?
I love HL2. I have been really tempted to try it with cedega, especially after episode one's release.

well I got Episode one. And I installed it on Windows XP a few hours ago. And right away I see some weard problems.
First: My PC Specs are:
Intel Pentium 4
3,06 GHZ Proccesor
1 GB RAM
GeForce FX 5600 256MB Video Card (This might give some probs I guess)
The Recommended System Requirements for HL2 are:
* CD-ROM: 0X CD-ROM
* CPU: 2.4 Ghz processor
* Hard Drive Space: 0 MB
* DVD-ROM: 0X DVD-ROM
* Other: DirectX 9 enabled graphics card
* RAM: 512 MB RAM
* Video Memory: 0 MB VRAM
And still, in Windows, for some reason it doesnt go smooth at full graphics. And sometimes all the buildings become pink O.o well pink and white blocks. Really weard. Any suggestions?
I whas thinking that, that whas just because of Windows, but I dunno for sure.
Thanks in advance

The graphics sometimes get corrupt when you try to change graphic settings in game or alt-tab or minimize out of the game.
If you didn't do this try verifiying your game files to make sure they downloaded correctly. (Right click on HL2:Ep1 in My Games and go to options, IIRC).
You can also get a good performance boost by defraging your drive, if you havent done so in a while.

the funny thing is, I havent been on Windows for like 3 months now, thats when I installed it. no idea why I still have it installed. So my windows is quite clean.
Maybe its my video card?

Well, ya. But Linux has quite a different set of drivers. ATI drivers basically suck to the extreme in Linux, and Linux does not have Directx, now does it? Half-life 2 may run quite well, but it wasn't made in true OpenGL, so it will almost definitely run better in Windows except in maybe loading times.

I've had better luck with the latest wine (0.9.19) release than with cedega for all Source engine based games (i.e. CSS, HL2, HL2: Ep One, etc.) For some reasons cedega runs HL2 too slow to play on my system.
As for cedega vs. windows, windows is by far the best way to run this game at them moment. Until more of the Direct3D apis are implemented better in wine/cedega windows will always run these games faster.

It uses dx, and doesnt run that well imo in cedega or wine (well at least using dx9) to get a playable frame rate you need to use dx8 or dx7.
btw, since hl2 is coming out for ps3, that must mean that there is an opengl renderer, but looks like valve will shaft pc users and not release it.
