I am a complete idiot and I accidently deleted the user folder of my bit torrent downloads. Is this permanently deleted or is it stored in another trash can? I am using Ubuntu 5.10. I do have some recovery software if it is completely gone but I would like to know if there is another way before I try that.
Thanks.

There is a package recover, however it only works with ext2 filesystem. If you did a default install you have an ext3 filesystem. But if you did some disk write, there is a big chance that your deleted data was replaced by some other. The recovery must be done as quick as possible to ensure a maximum recovery.

Well I shut down my server immediately after the deletion and removed the drive. It is now attached as an external drive on my windows xp machine so I can use some recovery software to get it back. I will let you know the results.

I just read that ext3 is backward compatible to ext2. So if you can mount your volume as ext2 maybe 'recover' will work. Try to dig this way...
