Hi everyone!
I don't know if this has been suggested before, or if it's even plausible, but I've got this idea for a new way to think desktop that i think could be very good. What I thought is that it would be really neat if one could make a wireframe-mesh for the desktop background on which to "post" things.
For instance, if your background image is a tree, there would be included in your theme a wire-mesh that is similar to the depicted tree, and was overlayed on the tree, but was invisible. On this mesh, you could put your icons, and you could put your minimized programs there, kinda like a secondary start-menu-thing. You could also put menus and the desktop switcher, so it could be a transition to a more organic way of accessing a computer. You could have different branches of the tree for different things, and the concept could also be used with other objects than a tree.
To begin with, and for development, it could (and should) be 2D to make it easier to make, but an eventual official version would in later stages have a 3D-mesh model. This could look really really neat, it would seem like your icons were hanging on a tree, a wall, a fridge or whatever your background image is.
I don't know if this idea is useful or even possible, but I thought it would make great eye-candy and could attract more users over from windows and macintosh if something like this was available.
Thanks in advance for any replies whatsoever, and I hope I might've sparked someones imagination.
