which do you prefer? I was thinking if VMware emulate windows as a whole then would that not be better for gaming or other apps (PS, Flash 8, etc.) as opposed to wine or cedega?

If it works with wine that is the best choice. Less hdd footprint, faster and 3d acceleration. If it doesn't work in wine I usually look for a replacement. WMware is the final resort. (although a pretty good last resort)

No, it wouldn't be better. One, WINE doesn't "emulate" the program, so it would run faster, especially seeing as how Vmware has to not only emulate that 1 program, but the whole OS running it.
Secondly, none of the current virtual machine programs (VMware, QEMU, Parallels, etc.) have 3D acceleration YET. I've heard VMware has some experimental mode, and that Parallels is aiming for it in future versions.
Thirdly, it's just nice to help Wine develop better by reporting any issues you have, that way we can one day have a very good alternative to running apps we want under Linux.

So like Engnome said, use it as your last resort...

VMWare doesn't emulate Windows either. It actually operates a functional installation. Therefore (for legit purposes) you need a licensed copy of Windows installed, and have to load the whole thing to do your work in Win.

WINE allows Linux to handle the program itself, and is completely legit without any cost.

There is nothing wrong with either method, just understand the differences.
