I want to know if anyone here knows anything about import duty in Au.

I have contacted System76, and I have been told that they will ship laptops to Sydney. I have intentions of buying one next year.

Since then I found out that I will probably have to pay import duty.

I have to say that I don't know much about that, or how it works. I have been told that it is about 10% of the total price.

So how does it work, do I just order the laptop, get them to send it to me, customs will hold it, send me a letter asking for money, and then when I pay they send the laptop?

I still want to get a laptop from System76 (even with import duty), as I want a laptop that I know Ubuntu will work with :)

Hi Josh, I'll check with our shipper on Monday - they can tell us the duties % for Australia. The way international works is typically as so: Our shipper gets the package through customs and to your doorstep. You are billed afterwords for applicable duties by our shipper.

I've never been on the receiving end of course but from what I've heard it's pretty simple. I'm sure simplicity depends on country and Au should be cool.
