i just reinstalled my ati radeon 9800 pro after months of not being installed. see it over heated, and the fan like melted off, so i had to order a new fan/heatsink, and in the meantime i used my old radeon 7500. but now its back and i installed the drivers for it successfully (catalyst control center).
but when i try to play some games (this is on windows, i have not tried it in ubuntu yet, and since im dual-booting, there's not much point in trying it in ubuntu)
like call of duty 2, battlefiled 2, or rome total war, as soon as im in action, there are some weird graphics that appear. its like the whole screen is full of little flashing pipes and chaos, it almost looks like one of those old 1930's movies where the movie is all shaky and there's little spasms and blotches here and there.
anyone have any idea?

You might have fried the video card. Usually artifacts like that appear from overheating. Check the card in Ubuntu using the fglrx drivers and see if the artifacts still appear there. I'd bet that you need another card though.

Yeah, looks like your gcard blew up or starting too. I had similiar problem some months ago with my GF card, so I bought a new one problem solved.

i thought about that too, but I don't see any physical signs of it being blown up or burned or anything. are there supposed to be visible signs of being fried? (i dont know much about graphics cards...)
so i thought it might just have been wrong display settings or something.

Well, I could seen any physical signs on mine, but they can be small. Hardware is very sensitive ;)
It all appeared first when using 3D acc. but later on 2D get affected as well.
I did asked more competent hardware knower than me when my gcard behaved weird and they was right two-three days after it couldn't display anything but white lines and some dots.

okay i installed the fglrx driver and installed america's army for linux to test out 3d capabilities, and i got the same effect as in windows with my 3d games. so i guess my card really is burnt out. and now i gotta say this: [*removed, to spare the innocent*]
so, since i got that out of the way, i've got a few more questions.
1. what is the best card i can get (ati preferably) for under $200?
2. what do i do w/ my old card, the 9800 pro, give it back to ati somehow or go and smash it with a hammer? is it completely useless now???
what sucks is that i spent like almost $40 on a new fan/heatsink for my card, and now there's not much point in it, unless i decide to install it on the new card.
thanks for all your help everyone.

Why not getting a Nvidia card when you at it? Way better driver support and performance in Linux. Dead easy to install too.

Okay, fair enough.
I can't give any advise which ATI you should buy, though. But for $200 as you mentioned you get a pretty good one I guess.
